Description

Job Title: Supervisor, Plant Operations

Job Code: 988

Hours: 3PM - 11:30 PM

FTE: 1

FLSA Status: Exempt

Department Name: Plant Operations

Location: Onsite, Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, Brattleboro, VT

POSITION SUMMARY:

This is a working supervisor role: in addition to supervisory and administrative duties, the Supervisor, Plant Operations performs hands-on maintenance and EVS work alongside the team as part of routine operations — not only during shortages or peak demand. This role provides direct, on-the-ground supervision of the assigned-shift Maintenance team while ensuring housekeeping and Environmental Services (EVS) operations across the hospital and designated auxiliary buildings meet CMS, infection control, bloodborne pathogen, and hazardous waste standards. This role coordinates assigned-shift maintenance work orders and quality control, serves as the primary point of contact for assigned-shift maintenance and EVS issues, and supports hospital laundry operations as needed. The Supervisor educates staff on safety and regulatory protocols, works alongside staff to complete maintenance and EVS tasks directly, and helps maintain a safe, clean, and well-functioning environment for patients, staff, and visitors.

DEPT. SCOPE OF SERVICE:

At this hospital, Environmental Services (EVS) operates as a function within the Plant Operations department, alongside Plant Services. Their combined scope is described below.

Environmental Services (EVS)

Environmental Services maintains a clean, sanitary, and aesthetically pleasing environment across all patient care areas, including but not limited to PCU, ER, OR, outpatient and diagnostic services, and physician offices, following established safety, cleaning, and infection control protocols. The department manages linen supplies, meeting and event setup, housing for on-call and traveling staff, and hospital recycling (cardboard, paper, office equipment, and furniture). EVS operates 24/7 to support the hospital and its affiliates.

Plant Services

Plant Services maintains the hospital's infrastructure, including safety, fire prevention and protection, telecommunications, equipment management, loss prevention, and grounds maintenance. The department oversees electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and power plant/boiler operations for a 61-bed hospital, 15 acres of grounds, 12 houses, two medical office buildings, and the hospital vehicle fleet, and manages hazardous communications, MSDS compliance, and related regulatory standards

Requirements

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Planning, Supervision & Communication

  •  Work alongside assigned-shift Maintenance and EVS staff to perform hands-on tasks directly, in addition to supervisory duties.
  •  Plan and assign daily tasks, conduct shift briefings, and provide consistent supervision of assigned-shift EVS and Maintenance operations.
  •  Serve as the primary point of contact for assigned-shift maintenance and EVS inquiries, resolving issues promptly and effectively.
  •  Supervise day-to-day operations in the absence of the Facilities Manager.
  •  Answer pages and radio calls, ensuring timely communication and response.

Staff Management & Development

  •  Provide counsel, guidance, and mentorship to staff, fostering a positive and productive work environment.
  •  Ensure comprehensive training and evaluation of EVS and Maintenance staff, including onboarding, computer systems, and emergency procedures.
  •  Participate in staff evaluations and assist with disciplinary actions as needed.
  •  Schedule employee time off, including vacations, ensuring adequate shift coverage.
  •  Assist new employees with any required training.
  •  Leverage the skills and abilities of each team member to build strong, effective teams.

Quality, Safety & Compliance

  •  Ensure all work adheres to established policies, including proper waste disposal, sharps handling, hazardous waste management, and infection control practices.
  •  Maintain a safe environment by enforcing barrier precautions, hand hygiene protocols, and proper use of safety signage.
  •  Partner with Infection Control on disinfection practices, including identifying and communicating modes of transmission of healthcare-acquired infections and their impact on patients.
  •  Contact pest control and other vendors as needed to maintain a safe and sanitary environment.
  •  Track and report maintenance incidents, maintaining accurate documentation.
  •  Recognize and address potential allergic reactions to cleaning chemicals, prioritizing patient and staff safety.

Operational & Financial Responsibilities

  •  Perform hands-on Maintenance and EVS work directly — including repairs, preventive maintenance, cleaning, and setup tasks — as a routine part of daily operations, not only during staff shortages or peak demand.
  •  Support the Facilities Manager with departmental budget management, including monitoring overtime and tracking supplies and equipment usage.
  •  Assess and recommend improvements to departmental policies and procedures.
  •  Perform other duties as assigned by the Facilities Manager.

Role Modeling

  •  Model service excellence in all interactions with internal and external customers, promoting a positive and professional image.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required
