At Northrop Grumman, our employees have incredible opportunities to work on revolutionary systems that impact people's lives around the world today, and for generations to come. Our pioneering and inventive spirit has enabled us to be at the forefront of many technological advancements in our nation's history - from the first flight across the Atlantic Ocean, to stealth bombers, to landing on the moon. Our culture thrives on intellectual curiosity, cognitive diversity and bringing your whole self to work — and we have an insatiable drive to do what others think is impossible. Our employees are not only part of history, they're making history.

Northrop Grumman Mission Systems Sector is seeking two Principal / Senior Principal Industrial Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals within our Sector Facilities Optimization organization. These positions will be located in Baltimore, MD, Rolling Meadows, IL, or San Diego, CA  and will report to the Manager 3, Industrial Engineering.

The Principal / Senior Principal Industrial Engineer will contribute to how our manufacturing and infrastructure footprint supports current and future business needs. This role focuses on developing data‑driven, scenario‑based analyses and recommendations that inform the Facility Governance Model and support the sector Manufacturing and Infrastructure strategy.

This individual will help translate demand signals (new programs, technology insertion, rate changes, consolidation, and workforce shifts) into layouts, capacity plans, and facility roadmaps that maximize space utilization, cost efficiency, and flexibility. The Principal / Senior Principal Industrial Engineer will work closely with Manufacturing, Operations, Facilities/Real Estate, Security, CIDO, Engineering, Supply Chain, Program Management, and Finance to support alignment, standardization, and disciplined capital and facility decision making.

Success in this role requires solid technical expertise in industrial engineering and space planning, strong analytical skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively across organizational boundaries while following the Facility Governance Model as the primary path for facility‑related decisions.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform industrial engineering and space planning analyses, including facility recommendations, capacity models, space utilization studies, production layouts, and supporting analytics that inform the Facility Governance Model.
  • Develop and maintain tools, models, and documentation for facility roadmaps, historical databases, and standard work supporting industrial engineering and space planning.
  • Use historical actuals, capacity and throughput data, space utilization trends, manpower data, and schedule assumptions to create scenario‑based layouts, facility roadmaps, and capital investment recommendations in support of governance reviews and leadership decisions.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing, Operations, Facilities/Real Estate, Security, CIDO, Engineering, Supply Chain, Program Management, Finance, and other stakeholders to develop credible, executable, and compliant facility options and recommendations aligned to sector strategy.
  • Apply industrial engineering methods and tools (e.g., capacity studies, value stream mapping, facility layout & simulation) to improve production flow, space utilization, and overall operational efficiency.
  • Prepare and present clear options, trade‑offs, and recommendations that balance near‑term operational needs with long‑term strategic objectives.
  • Contribute to frameworks, templates, and analytics that standardize how programs assess capacity, space, and capital needs, and help ensure consistent application across sites and business areas.
  • Support the use and continuous improvement of the Facility Governance Model as the decision path for facility‑related requests, changes, and investments.
  • Share technical knowledge and provide informal support to engineering, operations, and planning teams on layout optimization, capacity planning, and facility analytics (no direct people‑management responsibility).

This requisition may be filled at either a Principal (T3) or Senior Principal (T4) level.

Basic Qualifications for the Principal Industrial Engineer:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Systems Engineering, Operations Research, or a related STEM field with 5 or more years of relevant experience; 3 or more years of relevant experience with a Master’s degree; 1 or more years of relevant experience with a PhD.

Basic Qualifications for both levels:

  • Demonstrated experience with facility layout, capacity planning, space utilization, and production flow optimization.
  • Experience with industrial engineering methods and tools (e.g., capacity studies, value stream mapping, facility layout & simulation).
  • Experience using CAD and/or space planning tools, along with strong data analysis skills (e.g., Excel, BI/analytics tools) to develop and present recommendations.
  • Proven ability to partner and influence across functions such as Manufacturing, Operations, Facilities/Real Estate, Engineering, Supply Chain, Program Management, and Finance.
  • Experience preparing and presenting technical and business cases to leadership.
  • U.S. citizenship with the ability to obtain a Secret clearance with SAP access.

Preferred Qualifications for the Principal and Sr Principal Industrial Engineer:

  • Experience in aerospace/defense or other highly regulated, complex manufacturing environments.
  • Experience supporting complex facility or manufacturing initiatives, such as new program stand‑ups, rate changes, consolidations, or major layout/facility changes.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing or operating within formal facility or capital governance models.
  • Proficiency with advanced modeling and simulation tools for capacity, flow, and layout optimization (e.g., digital factory tools).
  • Experience developing and deploying standard tools, templates, and analytics platforms for industrial engineering and space planning at scale.
  • Proven track record of influencing senior leadership decisions through data‑driven business cases and scenario‑based recommendations.
  • Experience developing clear, comprehensive statements of work (SOWs) that enable effective supplier execution and maintain accountability to performance, schedule, and cost.
