Description

As a Staff Accountant, you will provide day-to-day accounting and administrative support to Camgian’s Finance & Contracts department, working directly for the Director of Finance & Contracts. You will prepare the transactions, reconciliations, schedules, and documentation that the Director relies on to close the books, report results, bill our customers, and satisfy government audit and compliance requirements. This role offers hands-on exposure to federal contract accounting, cost tracking, financial analysis, internal controls, and operational finance within a high-growth defense technology environment.

This is a full-time, exempt position based out of our headquarters in Starkville, MS, designed for a recent accounting graduate who is detail-oriented, intellectually curious, and eager to learn government contract accounting from the ground up. You will not be expected to arrive with government contracting experience. You will be expected to bring strong accounting fundamentals, care for accuracy, and the willingness to ask questions and learn. Work is performed under the direction and review of the Director of Finance & Contracts, with responsibility growing as you demonstrate proficiency.

Key Responsibilities

Accounting Operations & Month-End Close Support
  • Prepare recurring and routine journal entries, accrual and prepaid schedules, and supporting workpapers for review and approval by the Director of Finance & Contracts.
  • Perform monthly bank, credit card, and balance sheet account reconciliations, researching and documenting reconciling items.
  • Process accounts payable, including invoice coding, verification of supporting documentation, and preparation of payment runs for approval.
  • Review employee expense reports and corporate credit card transactions for accuracy, adequate documentation, and compliance with company policy.
  • Maintain fixed asset and depreciation schedules, and prepare the related entries.
  • Prepare assigned account analyses and roll-forward schedules, and compile variance data for the Director’s review of monthly results.
  • Assist with accounts receivable, cash application, and collections follow-up.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Project & Contract Accounting Support
  • Enter and maintain contract, project, and task data in the accounting/ERP system, using terms and setup parameters provided by the Director of Finance & Contracts.
  • Prepare draft customer invoices and vouchers for review and approval, and submit approved invoices through customer and government portals.
  • Compile labor, travel, materials, and subcontractor cost data supporting billing, reporting, and customer inquiries.
  • Perform routine timekeeping and labor distribution reviews, and follow up with employees on missing or late timesheets.
  • Assist in gathering historical cost, rate, and labor data requested by the Director in support of budgeting, forecasting, and proposal pricing.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Compliance, Audit & Documentation Support
  • Maintain organized, audit-ready documentation for project costs, timekeeping, expense reports, credit card activity, and contract files.
  • Apply established guidance to flag potentially unallowable costs for the Director’s determination, and maintain the supporting detail.
  • Assemble schedules, samples, and supporting documentation requested during financial statement audits, government audits, and customer reviews.
  • Follow established accounting policies, internal controls, and desk procedures, and identify gaps or inefficiencies for discussion.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Process & Systems Support
  • Support data validation, cleanup, testing, and documentation for accounting system and process improvement initiatives.
  • Build and maintain recurring reports, reconciliations, and templates in Excel to reduce manual effort and improve accuracy.
  • Respond to routine internal requests for financial data from program management, engineering, and corporate staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from an accredited institution, conferred by the start date.
  • 0–2 years of professional accounting experience; internship, co-op, or part-time accounting experience is welcomed but not required.
  • Working knowledge of U.S. GAAP fundamentals, including accruals, revenue recognition, and cost allocation.
  • Strong proficiency with Excel (lookups, pivot tables, and formulas).
  • High attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to meet recurring deadlines.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, and comfort asking questions and seeking direction.
  • Ability to handle confidential financial data with discretion.
  • United States Citizenship.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master of Professional Accountancy, Master of Taxation, or a related master’s degree in accounting.
  • Active CPA license, or progress toward licensure (CPA exam sections passed or eligibility to sit).
  • Coursework or internship exposure to government contracting, auditing, or internal controls.
  • Familiarity with FAR/DFARS requirements and DCAA audit expectations, or a demonstrated interest in learning them.
  • Exposure to an accounting or ERP system.
  • Interest in automation, reporting, and data analysis tools.
  • Strong analytical skills and creative problem-solving ability.
Why Join Us?
  • Hands-on experience in corporate and contract accounting within a DoD-focused environment.
  • Exposure to financial compliance, program controls, and real-world cost accounting that is difficult to obtain early in a career.
  • Direct, daily mentorship from a CPA and experienced government contracts finance leader.
  • A clear path for growth in responsibility as skills and proficiency develop.
  • Competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package.
  • A dynamic, innovative, and inclusive team culture focused on continuous learning and experimentation.
