A Day in the Life

We’re a high-performing Artificial Intelligence and Algorithm team based in Edinburgh, supporting both novel sensor research and the enhancement of mature, field-deployed products. Our team is part of the Acute Care and Monitoring (ACM) Operating Unit, headquartered in  Lafayette, Colorado. ACM is committed to driving innovation and long-term growth through excellence in research and commercialization.

We’re looking for a versatile and passionate Data Engineer  to join our cutting-edge R&D team. In this role, you’ll design, architect, and manage complex research data pipelines that drive innovation across multiple projects: from early-stage exploratory research to the development of world-class patient monitoring technologies. 

You’ll thrive in a fast-paced environment, contributing across the full data lifecycle and collaborating with cross-functional teams. Your broad technical expertise and hands-on approach will help shape the data infrastructure that powers our AI and algorithm development efforts.

 

This role will be based in our Edinburgh office

Primary Responsibilities:

• Own the end-to-end data lifecycle, from clinical study data collection to clinical validation trials.
• Design and manage scalable data infrastructure across clinical trials, sensor platforms, and HPC environments.
• Maintain and optimize data storage, access, security, and backup systems.
• Develop data manipulation, processing, and testing tools to ensure data quality and reliability.
• Define and implement data architecture, engineering best practices, and standards across R&D.
• Collaborate with AI engineers, researchers, and cross-functional teams to align data systems with project goals.
• Enable reliable, efficient data usage for AI, machine learning, and signal processing applications.
• Drive data architecture decisions and continuous improvements in a dynamic R&D environment.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Engineering, Physics, Biomedical Engineering, or a related technical field.
• 4+ years of relevant professional experience in data engineering, software engineering, or a related field.
• Strong expertise in database architecture, design, and management.
• Proven experience developing and maintaining ETL/ELT pipelines and scalable data workflows.
• Strong proficiency in Python and SQL, or other relevant programming languages.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines, automation, and configuration management.
  

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in medical devices, sensor technologies, or algorithm development.
• Understanding of signal processing techniques.
• Familiarity with machine learning and artificial intelligence frameworks.
• Exposure to computer vision and image processing.
• Knowledge of healthcare industry standards and regulatory requirements.
• Working proficiency in C++, C#, or MATLAB.

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).
