Public Service Worker

This position is responsible for operating light and heavy equipment on project sites in an assigned department. Responsibilities may include providing work direction to labor support; regularly performing basic heavy equipment operation; and performing tasks associated with assigned projects such as repairing streets, forestry tasks, maintaining athletic fields, parks maintenance and snow removal.
 
Hiring Range
$33.90 to $35.83 per hour per 2026-2028 I.U.O.E., Local 49 contract depending upon qualification and experience, plus excellent benefits.These examples are intended only as illustrations of various types of work performed and are not necessarily all inclusive.  The job description is subject to change as the needs of the employer and requirements of the job change. Duties include but are not limited to:

• Performs semi-skilled and skilled manual labor for assigned area(s), which may include: forestry operations; patching road; plowing snow; mowing; and painting lines.
• Performs routine repairs and/or replacement of parts, which may include: repairing park facilities; fence repair; and repairing standard building components.
• Operates light and heavy equipment related to forestry, parks and streets and operations.
• Monitors tool, supplies, and equipment inventory; notifies appropriate individual(s) when inventory needs to be replenished.
• Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

• Maintenance, repair and installation procedures and processes.
• Equipment operating and maintenance procedures and processes.
• Recordkeeping procedures and processes.
• Safe work practices.
• Computers and applicable software applications.
• Operating applicable tools and equipment.
• Performing repairs.
• Monitoring and replenishing inventory.
• Previous experience with municipal urban forestry/vegetation code inspections.
• Operating computers and applicable software applications.
• Applying communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisors, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

Minimum Requirements

• High school diploma or G.E.D.
• Three years’ maintenance and equipment operation or related experience.
• Current Minnesota Class A Commercial Driver's License with air brake and tanker endorsement or ability to obtain within six months of hire.

Desirable Requirements

• Experience plowing with single tandem axle dump truck with wing.
• Experience working with asphalt.
• Experience in arboriculture including use of chainsaws and other forestry equipment.
• Athletic field maintenance experience.
• Irrigation experience.
• Ability to obtain certifications as required by supervisor.

• Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
• Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 30 pounds of forces constantly to move objects.
• Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, environmental hazards and intense noises.
