Public Service Worker - Utilities

This position performs a variety of skilled and unskilled tasks associated with the operation and maintenance of the City’s water and wastewater (utilities) department; operates a variety of motorized and non-motorized equipment and tools; performs inspection and maintenance on tools and equipment; assists other departments as assigned; and performs a variety of maintenance tasks associated with the day-to-day operation of the City’s water and wastewater utilities.

• Perform tasks and utilize equipment to operate and maintain water plant, water distribution, and storage facilities including sample collection, inspection, repair, maintenance, and operating hydrants, valves, piping, curb box, and other associated equipment and infrastructure.
• Perform tasks and utilize equipment to maintain the wastewater collection system including operating and maintaining lift stations and their pumps, valves and controls, sewer force main cleaning, manhole repair, and other associated equipment and infrastructure.
• Read water meters monthly and replace or repair water meters.
• Complete locating of the City’s public utilities as required by law.
• Perform startup and shutdown of irrigation systems and complete major repairs.
• Perform maintenance of mechanical equipment, electrical, plumbing, and record keeping.
• Operate and maintain light and heavy machinery and equipment such as pumps, backhoe, excavator, skid steer, loader, sewer jet/vac truck, dump trucks, steamer pump, cement mixer, or other equipment as assigned.
• Perform snow and ice control operations on city streets, sidewalks, trails, and municipal buildings.
• Maintain and clean shop facilities and equipment.
• Conducts inspections and completes inspection documentation for utility construction projects

Other Job Functions:

• Perform other maintenance tasks and assist other public works departments as assigned, including emergency situations or to balance seasonal workloads and schedules.
• Perform other duties and assume responsibility as needed or assigned.

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
• Valid MN Driver’s License with a good driving record.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends.
• Possess (or be able to obtain within 1 year) a valid MN Class B Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker and Air Brake Endorsements.

• Previous experience in the operation and maintenance of general water infrastructure and sanitary collection systems..
• Experience with the operation and maintenance of Water Plant and Lift Station systems, including SCADA controls and operations.
• Vocational/technical training in water, sewer, or related field.
• Class D (or higher) Water License.
• Class SD (or higher) Wastewater Collection License.
