The Gasoline Senior Risk Officer is a member of the Risk team based in Singapore, reporting to the Risk Manager, and is responsible for leading and delivering P&L and position analysis to Management and the Front Office. The role works in close collaboration with traders, operations, trade support, accounting and back office, and is a key control function ensuring quality reporting of trading performance and risk analysis for the region.
Main Responsibilities
- Manage daily production and reporting of P&L, positions and exposures from the trading system(s); validate positions and P&L in an expedient manner and ensure accurate P&L attribution into risk buckets and P&L drivers
- Manage daily checks and ensure the integrity and completeness of trades booked in the trading system(s)
- Daily pricing exposure reconciliation with trading and operations
- Build and monitor in-house forward curves and check the accuracy and consistency of forward curves against market values; understand how the forward curves are constructed and assess whether the curve methodologies applied are robust
- Check and monitor the marked to market (“MTM”) of physical deals entered in the ETRM/trading systems
- Analyse mark-to-market valuations, risk positions, basis changes, curves and volatilities and P&L results daily
- Check and reconcile futures trades between the trading systems/ETRM and clearing agents and exchanges
- Monitor consumption of VAR against desk limits and escalate breaches to risk management; demonstrate a good understanding of the drivers of VAR applicable to the desk
- Responsible for reviewing and resolving breaks from month end and year end reconciliations on a timely basis, and contribute to the reporting of trading results and positions to senior management
- Develop and maintain risk reporting and analytics to communicate positions, P&L and market risk to traders and management, and follow the risk strategies of the trading desks independently
- Review and maintain information reliability in the trading systems, including costs, and assess the reasonableness of costs entered by operations
- Provide critical thinking around risk reporting processes, quantification and analysis of more complex commodity exposures of trading activities
- Identify and assist in the implementation of process improvements, from system testing and implementation through to desk level processes
- Identify and communicate operational risk, and define risk mitigating measures and priorities
- Coordinate with Compliance to ensure compliance requirements are met
- Prepare various reports and analysis for publishing internally and to the Management Board, as the case may be
- Liaise closely with Front Office, Operations, Trade Support, Controlling, Credit Risk, Market Risk and IT
- Training and mentoring of Junior Risk Officers
- Identify control gaps, unusual trading activity and red flags and escalate to management with proposed solutions on a timely basis
- Back up and support other desks’ Risk Officers when required
- Ad-hoc duties as assigned by manager
Profile
The individual should have the following:
- Bachelor’s degree with a major in Finance, Economics, Business Administration, Accountancy, Mathematics, Statistics, Computing or equivalent
- Minimum 5 years (and typically more than 6 years) of relevant experience in a similar role in the commodity trading business, preferably within a major trading house, an oil major, investment bank or hedge fund
- Strong understanding of the mechanics of derivatives (futures, swaps and options) and physical trading, including the ability to calculate positions and P&L, marked to market and hedging concepts, and the various types of trading strategies and Incoterms, specific to Gasoline desk
- Demonstrated excellent knowledge of commodities and financial instruments, with excellent knowledge of and a strong interest in trading activities;
- Proficient with ETRM systems and proficiency in Microsoft Excel is a must; VBA, Power BI, Python or SQL skills are a strong advantage
- Good knowledge of analytics tools and technologies
- Fluent in spoken and written English; ability to speak Chinese will be a plus
- Experience in Gasoline desk risk is preferred but strong candidate with experience with other desks will also be considered.
