The Opportunity

As the Lead Design Engineer - Tunnelling, you will provide technical leadership across the design, analysis and delivery of geotechnical and tunnelling solutions from feasibility and tender phases through to detailed design and construction.

You will play a critical role in managing multidisciplinary interfaces, mentoring engineers, supporting project delivery teams and ensuring technically robust, safe and innovative outcomes.

Key responsibilities;

• Lead the design of tunnelling and underground infrastructure projects.

• Oversee excavation, support and lining system design for TBM and conventionally excavated tunnels.

• Direct complex geotechnical assessments and numerical modelling activities.

• Develop ground improvement, groundwater management and risk mitigation strategies.

• Provide technical leadership during project delivery and construction phases.

• Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams and key project stakeholders.

• Contribute to major tenders, methodologies and technical proposals.

• Mentor and develop engineering talent within the business.

• Drive technical excellence, innovation and continuous improvement.

Required Skills and Competencies

• Degree qualifications in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering or a related discipline, combined with significant experience in tunnelling and underground works design across both TBM and conventional excavation methods.

• Strong technical expertise in excavation support systems, tunnel linings and underground construction methodologies, supported by advanced geotechnical analysis and numerical modelling experience.

• Proven knowledge of ground improvement techniques, grouting, groundwater management, geotechnical investigations, monitoring systems and construction-phase support.

• Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary engineering teams, manage complex technical interfaces and collaborate effectively with clients, contractors and key stakeholders.

• Track record delivering major transport, water, energy or civil infrastructure projects, with strong technical reporting, stakeholder management, tender preparation and proposal development skills
