Description
ON.energy is building the power infrastructure that makes the AI era possible. As AI demand surges past what the grid and traditional data centers can support, ON.energy provides a new class of power technology proven at gigawatt scale and trusted by the world’s leading cloud and AI companies. Our systems are already deployed across 2.5 GW of hyper-scale campuses, validated by top U.S. national labs, and certified for grid-safe operation by major utilities. With real products in the field, we’re scaling faster than the grid can, transforming power from a bottleneck into a competitive advantage for the companies building the future.
Principal Solution Engineer
Location: Tysons, VA (Hybrid - 3 days in office)
Role Overview
The Principal Solution Engineer serves as the technical expert between Sales Engineering, Project Engineering, and Product Engineering. This role owns the intake, assessment, and resolution of all sales engineering and customer driven technical requests, driving each to conclusion. Where a request requires a change to an existing product or system baseline, this role defines the change impact and leads it through the formal Engineering Change Management (ECM) process. Success requires strong system level thinking across electrical, mechanical, and software (EMS) domains, along with the communication and interpersonal skills to align stakeholders across Sales, Engineering, and Product.
Key Responsibilities
1. Sales & Customer Request Ownership
- Sales Interface: Serve as the primary technical point of contact between Sales Engineering and the Engineering organization for all incoming customer and sales driven requests.
- Assessment: Own and drive the assessment workflow, evaluate each request, determine disposition (proceed, reject, or route for further engineering review), and ensure timely, well documented decisions.
- Resolution Ownership: Coordinate with Sales and Project Engineering to resolve requests that do not require a formal change but still require cross functional alignment and follow through, driving each to conclusion.
2. Engineering Change Management
- Change Impact Definition: For requests requiring a product or system change, define the scope and impact of the change across affected subsystems before it enters formal review.
- ECM Leadership: Lead approved changes through the Engineering Change Management (ECM) process to closure, ensuring documentation, approvals, and implementation stay on track.
- Product Alignment: Partner with the Product team to ensure customer and sales requests are reflected in product roadmap and configuration decisions where appropriate.
3. System Level Technical Ownership
- Cross Domain Assessment: Apply system level thinking across electrical, mechanical, and software (EMS) subsystems to assess feasibility, risk, and cross domain impact of proposed changes.
- Electrical, Controls & Communication Scope: Evaluate technical requests spanning multiple domains, including:
- High Voltage: Assessing HV system impact within BESS skid and system designs.
- Low Voltage & Controls: Overseeing low voltage distribution and control logic changes.
- Communication Architecture: Ensuring communication and interfaces remain consistent through system changes.
- Documentation: Maintain clear, structured documentation and status tracking for all requests moving through assessment and change management.
Required Qualifications
- 15+ years of experience in applications engineering, systems engineering, ideally within energy storage, power generation, or industrial electrical equipment.
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering required; Electrical Engineering strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated experience spanning electrical, mechanical, and software (EMS) systems, including high voltage, low voltage, controls, and communication architectures.
- Proven ability to lead technical requests from intake through resolution, including ownership of formal engineering change management (ECM) processes.
- Strong system level thinking, able to assess how a change in one subsystem (electrical, mechanical, or software) affects the system as a whole.
- Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to translate technical detail for varied audiences (customers, sales, engineering, leadership).
- Ability to work on site in Tysons, Virginia a minimum of three days per week (hybrid schedule).
