Parks & Rec. Maintenance Tech Lead

The City of Clinton is seeking a dependable and experienced Parks Maintenance Technician Lead to help maintain our parks, athletic fields, playgrounds, trails, greenways, landscaping, and recreational facilities.

This is a working lead position—meaning you will guide the daily work of the parks maintenance team while working alongside them. The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader who values safety, teamwork, quality service, and creating welcoming public spaces for the community.

What You’ll Do

In this role, you will:

• Lead and participate in the routine and emergency maintenance of City parks, trails, playgrounds, athletic fields, greenways, landscaping, and recreational facilities.
• Assign daily tasks and monitor work to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and according to City standards.
• Train and guide new, seasonal, and existing employees on equipment operation, safety procedures, and job expectations.
• Operate and maintain mowers, weed trimmers, blowers, tractors, utility vehicles, hand tools, and other grounds-maintenance equipment.
• Inspect parks, facilities, playgrounds, and grounds to identify safety hazards and maintenance needs.
• Coordinate timely repairs and corrective actions when concerns are identified.
• Apply herbicides and pesticides in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and safety requirements.
• Maintain accurate records of completed work, materials used, inspections, and equipment maintenance.
• Respond professionally and courteously to public questions or concerns related to parks maintenance.
• Assist with the setup and breakdown of tables, tents, signage, barricades, and other materials for City programs and special events.
• Support the City’s urban forestry efforts through planting, pruning, and removing trees and shrubs.
• Promote and enforce safe work practices, including the proper use of personal protective equipment.
• Respond to occasional emergencies or work evening, weekend, or holiday assignments when needed.

What We’re Looking For:

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• At least two years of experience in grounds maintenance, parks maintenance, landscaping, or a related field.
• One year of lead or supervisory experience is preferred.
• Valid South Carolina driver’s license and a good driving record.
• Ability to successfully complete a pre-employment drug screening and background check.
• Ability to obtain applicable pesticide certifications is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The successful candidate should have:

• Working knowledge of landscaping, turf maintenance, irrigation systems, and facility upkeep.
• Experience safely operating and maintaining small and large outdoor equipment.
• An understanding of workplace safety practices, OSHA requirements, and municipal procedures.
• Strong leadership, communication, organization, and time-management skills.
• The ability to assign work, provide clear instructions, and lead a small team effectively.
• The ability to read site maps, follow work orders, and prepare clear and accurate reports.
• The ability to work independently, solve problems, and respond appropriately to changing priorities.
• The physical ability to perform strenuous outdoor work and lift or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

Working Conditions

This position:

• Performs physically demanding work primarily outdoors.
• Works in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, and high-pollen environments.
• Regularly uses machinery, power equipment, hand tools, and chemicals while following required safety precautions.
• May require occasional evening, weekend, holiday, after-hours, or emergency assignments.

Supervision and Collaboration

The Parks Maintenance Technician Lead reports directly to the Parks and Recreation Division Manager. This position works closely with parks maintenance employees, seasonal staff, department directors, administrative personnel, and employees across City departments to support daily operations, special events, and community needs.
