Job Description

This is a rare opportunity to lead the transformation of pediatric neuroscience across South Carolina and help build one of the premier pediatric neuroscience programs in the Southeast.

The current need/reasons for recruiting are:

  • MUSC is seeking a visionary Division Chief of Pediatric Neurology who can rebuild, recruit, innovate, and establish MUSC as the referral destination for children with neurologic disease throughout South Carolina and the Southeast.
  • The Department of Pediatrics, MUSC Children’s Health, and the College of Medicine have made a substantial long-term commitment to growth, including approved strategic expansion to 13 pediatric neurologist faculty positions and six advanced practice provider positions.
  • The Division is undergoing strategic rebuilding following several anticipated and unanticipated faculty departures, creating an exceptional opportunity for the next Chief to recruit a new generation of faculty and shape the future of pediatric neuroscience across the state.
  • The next Chief will partner closely with Department, Hospital, and College leadership to expand clinical programs, strengthen education and research, improve statewide access, and advance a multidisciplinary pediatric neuroscience strategy.
  • MUSC is located in Charleston, South Carolina, a historic, vibrant, coastal city known for outstanding quality of life, nationally recognized culture, excellent schools, outdoor recreation, and family-friendly amenities.

Opportunity Thesis
Few opportunities combine the stability of an established children’s hospital with the chance to build something transformative. The next Division Chief will have the support, resources, and institutional commitment needed to shape pediatric neuroscience across South Carolina for decades to come.

WHY CHARLESTON

Charleston offers an exceptional coastal lifestyle with nationally recognized culture, outstanding restaurants, historic neighborhoods, excellent schools, outdoor recreation, and access to beaches, waterways, and family-friendly amenities. For candidates and families, Charleston provides a rare combination of academic opportunity, professional impact, and quality of life.

RECRUITMENT PROCESS

  • Qualified candidates will be shared with Dr. Atz, Antavius Farr-Heyward, and other designated search stakeholders.
  • Feedback on candidates should be provided within 24 to 48 hours of submission to maintain momentum and candidate engagement.
  • Once mutual interest has been confirmed, AMN Healthcare will coordinate an introductory call or virtual meeting with MUSC leadership.
  • Selected candidates will be invited to participate in the formal interview process, which may include virtual and on-site components.
  • Post-interview feedback should be provided within 48 hours whenever possible. Timely feedback is critical to maintaining candidate interest in a competitive pediatric neurology leadership market.
  • After the visit and stakeholder debrief, the search team should be able to determine whether the candidate will move forward in the process or be considered for an offer.
  • Candidates must apply for the position online before they can complete the interview process, consistent with MUSC requirements.

PARTNERSHIP EXCLUSIVITY AGREEMENT (IF APPLICABLE)

AMN Healthcare and MUSC have entered into an exclusive agreement for this search referenced in D3 in the partnership agreement. To create a seamless search process, there is an expectation that all candidates who apply to the internal MUSC application portal or contact members of the MUSC team directly be forwarded to Ben Moulton for vetting and process coordination.

Candidates may receive cobranded outreach or have a prior connection to the institution or a current faculty member, causing them to go directly to that contact to learn more. Please direct those candidates by email back to Ben Moulton. This demonstrates that the nationwide marketing campaign is working and allows all candidates to experience an equal, coordinated, and balanced process.

Process Alignment: The same level of information will be provided on all interested candidates, including level of interest, timing, needs, background, license verification, references, and other relevant details, regardless of origin. This helps eliminate perceived bias, supports equity in the decision-making process, protects the reputation of the program and institution, and allows MUSC to make the most informed decision when offering and onboarding a new faculty leader.

Response Rate and Time to Fill: For searches of this type, AMN Healthcare utilizes cobranded candidate sourcing and advertising campaigns to target pediatric neurology leaders and relevant academic faculty. The team will leverage MUSC’s name, logo, specific facility information, and Charleston location details to promote the opportunity extensively in the candidate market. Direct applicants and faculty referrals should be forwarded to AMN Healthcare so the team can begin the vetting process immediately.

The benefit of sharing direct applicant information with AMN Healthcare is that the search consultants can screen candidates who are not qualified or seriously committed to interviewing and/or accepting the opportunity, which saves the MUSC team time and supports a more consistent candidate experience.

Note: MUSC may exclude candidates who are already in the interview process as well as current MUSC fellows, as appropriate.
