Job Description

The Financial Crimes Risk Analyst ensures the Bank’s compliance with the applicable aspects of the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), USA PATRIOT Act, and Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) regulations by monitoring, identifying, reporting, and investigating suspicious activity relative to potential money laundering activity, financial crimes and/or terrorist financing. Specifically, the Financial Crimes Risk Analyst will assess the financial crimes risk associated with various customer accounts and transactions; conducting research to determine the root cause and potential financial crimes; and ensuring the accurate and timely reporting of suspicious activity as identified via Anti-Money Laundering (AML) regulations and FinCEN guidance regarding same.

Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  • Prepares concise and thorough alert and case investigation summaries outlining relevant details to support a final outcome for possible SAR filings.
  • Accurately analyzes transactional data to identify activity indicative of Money Service Businesses (MSBs), Marijuana/Cannabis-related Businesses (including those adjacent to this industry), Non-Bank Financial Institutions (NBFIs), Politically Exposed Persons (PSPs), Non-Resident Alien (NRA), Privately-Owned ATM Operators (POATMs), Crypto-Currency, etc.; Refers any such activity to the Financial Crimes High Risk Customers and Accounts team. 
  • Researches, analyzes and investigates customer account behavior for potential Anti-Money Laundering (AML)-related suspicious activity that is referred to case in Verafin. Determines if a Suspicious Activity Report is likely to be filed with FinCEN.
  • Partners with banking center and other department employees, as necessary, in researching and investigating cases. Communicates with applicable bank personnel to obtain any further documentation and/or information necessary to complete the investigations.
  • Administers essential workflow functions such as: documenting complex cases; ensuring that SAR narratives include all pertinent data elements; NO SAR decisions are thoroughly substantiated, complying with federal interagency guidance and internal Bank policies and standards; and provides draft SARs and NO SAR decisions to the applicable Financial Crimes Risk Manager for review and approval.
  • Completes renewal review for continuing activity 90 days following original SAR filing. Makes recommendation to refile or close.
  • Operates all systems and software programs used to obtain customer information, transaction history, and archive reports used to gather information for the FCRM program.
  • Utilizes a variety of internal bank systems and external research tools to investigate, research, and prepare documentation related to anti-money laundering investigations.
  • Maintains subject matter expertise of the banking/financial services industry and AML/financial crimes-related regulations, as well as typologies for suspicious activity or terrorist financing.
  • Stays up-to-date on current and new policies and regulations as they relate to anti-money laundering schemes and characteristics.
  • Support any special projects or critical casework regarding BSA/AML matters.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required; Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university highly preferred; minimum three (3) years of BSA/AML/OFAC experience required including recent bank BSA compliance experience within the last 12 months. Five (5) years of banking experience (including BSA/AML/OFAC experience) is required.  Prior experience with Verafin is preferred.

Certifications

Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS) or other recognized AML certification preferred.

Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of the Internet, Outlook, Microsoft Word and Excel.  Ability to learn bank-specific software such as Verafin, IBS (Core), IBS (Teller Insight), IBS (Deposit Origination), AccuSystems, nCino, Encompass, etc.   Ability to use basic office machines.

Other Skills

Maintains proficient knowledge of the rules and regulations, including but not limited to, the Bank Secrecy Act, USA PATRIOT Act, and OFAC as well as the Bank’s policies, procedures, products, services, geographies, and risk profile. 

Understands how to operate all systems and software programs used to obtain customer information, transaction history, and archive reports used to gather information for the BSA program.

Physical Demands  

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus.
