Are you ready to lead the strategy behind IOA's corporate, foundation, and government funding partnerships? As Director of Institutional Giving, you'll drive the vision and execution of IOA's institutional fundraising — securing and growing corporate and foundation support while providing thought partnership on renewing and securing key city and state government grants.

Reporting to the Vice President of Philanthropy, you will be a key member of the Philanthropy team, partnering closely with the VP, program leaders, and Board members to grow institutional revenue in support of IOA's mission.

You will oversee all corporate and foundation support for IOA, directly supervise the Grants Manager, and serve as a thought partner and strategic support to colleagues managing the renewal and pursuit of select city and state government grants.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy & Growth

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive institutional giving strategy across corporate, foundation, and government funding sources to meet ambitious revenue goals.
  • Monitor emerging trends in foundation and corporate giving activity and recommend responsive approaches to maintaining and growing support for IOA.
  • Serve as a strategic thought partner on initiatives that advance IOA’s long-term growth and impact.
  • Help design and shape initiatives that build meaningful pathways for diverse communities to engage with and support the Institute on Aging as donors, partners, advisors, and ambassadors.

Fundraising & Relationship Management

  • Own and grow a portfolio of corporate and foundation funders — managing the full cycle from prospect identification and research through cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship — leveraging existing relationships and identifying new prospects aligned with IOA’s strategic priorities.
  • Act as a thought partner and strategic resource for colleagues and consultants leading the renewal of city and state government grants.
  • Partner with program leaders and IOA’s Business Intelligence team to translate program impact and data into compelling funding proposals and campaign strategies.
  • Serve as a liaison across program teams, proactively sourcing program updates and impact stories to inform high-quality proposals and reports.
  • Serve as a spokesperson for IOA with institutional funders, representing the organization in meetings, site visits, and funder convenings.

Leadership & Operations

  • Supervise and mentor the Grants Manager, overseeing grant proposal and report development, submission calendars, and compliance.
  • Track and report on institutional giving pipeline, proposal outcomes, and grant compliance requirements.
  • Contribute to building a culture of philanthropy across the organization, supporting internal teams in understanding and articulating the value of their work to funders and external audiences.

What You Bring

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university required; advanced degree a plus. Equivalent combination of education and relevant experience will also be considered.
  • 12+ years of progressive leadership experience in philanthropy, with a proven track record of growing revenue.
  • Demonstrated success in securing major gifts, cultivating high-net-worth donors, and building long-term philanthropic relationships.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, communication, and public speaking skills.
  • Strong organizational and strategic planning abilities with an unwavering attention to detail.
  • A collaborative, solutions-oriented mindset, and ability to engage stakeholders at all levels.
  • Deep commitment to IOA’s mission and values. Experience in healthcare, aging services, nonprofit, or other mission-driven organizations preferred.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated success securing six- and seven-figure corporate and foundation grants.
  • Experience with city and/or state government grant processes and compliance requirements.
  • Supervisory experience, with a track record of developing team members.
  • Familiarity with the San Francisco Bay Area philanthropic and funder landscape.
  • Experience in higher education, academic medicine, healthcare, biomedical research, or a mission-driven nonprofit organization.
  • Familiarity with scientific research and the ability to translate complex scientific concepts for non-scientific audiences.

Compensation

Range: $160,000 – $175,000/annual

This amount is not necessarily reflective of actual compensation that may be earned, nor a promise of any specific pay for any specific employee, which is always dependent on actual experience, education and other factors.

This range does not include any additional equity, benefits, or other non-monetary compensation which may be included.
