Skate into an exciting opportunity with the City of Pomona! The Community Services Department is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Technical Specialist II – Skateboard Lead to oversee skateboarding programs for Pomona youth.

Under the supervision of the Recreation Coordinator and Recreation Supervisor, the Skateboard Lead develops programs, guides staff, promotes safe practices, and helps ensure program and City goals are met. Assignment will be based on operational needs and the selected candidate’s experience.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate has strong skateboarding experience and enjoys leading programs for youth of varying ages and skill levels. They are safety-focused, organized, adaptable, and able to work effectively with participants, families, staff, community members, and program partners. They will help lead the skate team, expand programming, and maintain a safe and inclusive environment.

Assignment and Work Schedule

This at-will, hourly, part-time position will work approximately 15–20 hours per week and fewer than 1,000 hours in a twelve-month period. Most shifts will be scheduled during afternoons and evenings, although summer mornings and some weekends may be required. The position does not include City-sponsored health benefits.

Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:
 
 Education & Experience
  • High school graduate or GED equivalency required.
  • 2 years of experience in the field of skateboarding, preferably in an instructional capacity.
  • 2 years of paid or volunteer experience working directly with youth. 
License or Certificates
  • Must possess and maintain a valid California Class "C" driver's license and have a good driving record.

  • Act as a liaison between staff, community members, collaborative partners, and other city personnel to foster strong relationships.
  • Oversee risk management and safety concerns specific to skateboarding programs and recreation facilities.
  • Conduct regular meetings and training sessions to support program development, planning, and implementation.
  • Work collaboratively to develop new programs and best practices across multiple program locations.
  • Ensure compliance with emergency and safety procedures; document incidents/accidents and communicate appropriately.
  • Communicate positively and effectively with participants, City officials, parents/guardians, community members, and colleagues.
  • Maintain professionalism and uphold the City’s image and mission in all interactions and program activities.
  • Assess, maintain, and properly manage skateboarding-related equipment, including safety gear and skateboards.
  • Demonstrate physical competency in skateboarding to lead and inspire confidence in program participants.
  • Utilize modern office equipment and software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access, for administrative duties.
  • Operate a motor vehicle safely to support program needs and transportation requirements.
  • Manage multiple projects independently and strategically, while maintaining a high quality of work and meeting deadlines.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment: Ability to work in a standard office environment and outdoors in city parks; ability to travel to different sites and locations.
