Description
Under general supervision of the Electrical Substation & Metering Superintendent, the Substation Supervisor supervises and participates in the maintenance, operation, installation, and testing of equipment for electrical substations, high voltage switching stations, high voltage electrical transmission and distribution systems, to include but not limited to: Act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) on communications, NERC requirements for testing/maintenance, and other technical fields related to substation operations; Provide training to Substation Technicians and evaluate work procedures to ensure adherence to safety standards and guidelines; and participate in and supervise substation field-related activities performed by in-house technicians and/or contractors.
- Lead and supervise substation technicians in the daily operation, maintenance, and testing of electrical transmission and distribution substations. Oversee field execution to ensure quality production of all substation-related work while enforcing organizational safety guidelines and driving full compliance with NERC and ERCOT testing, documentation, and reporting requirements.
- Oversee, train, motivate, evaluate, and direct work assigned staff. Coach direct reports in the installation, testing, troubleshooting and repairing of various equipment such controls, voltage regulators, voltage supplies, relays, wiring control panels, etc.; work with employees to correct deficiencies; identify and resolve employee concerns and/or problems; complete performance evaluations; and make hiring, terminating and disciplinary decisions or recommendations.
- Interface with Operations regarding switching orders, substation upgrades, and configuration changes. Provide operational support and collaborate with cross-functional technical teams, SCADA, Metering, and Relaying, to support integrated substation work and projects.
- Develop, maintain, and enforce procedures and processes for the installation, removal, maintenance, operation, and testing of substation/switch station equipment, communications equipment, and supervisory control and data acquisition equipment.
- Ensure all substation testing and diagnostic equipment is calibrated to meet established standards and regulatory codes.
- Manage, maintain, and populate software tracking systems for substation assets, including the documentation of inspections, maintenance history, equipment testing, equipment condition, and regulatory compliance.
- Manage the full lifecycle of substation construction and maintenance projects, including planning, scheduling, budgetary proposal preparation, bid management, vendor selection, and material procurement, ensuring long-lead items align with construction timelines. Communicate project risks and site requirements to leadership, and maintain accurate, up-to-date as-built plan sets for all facilities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required:
- Associate Degree in Applied Science in electrical power distribution or a related technical field; and three (3) years of experience in electrical testing or electric substation work, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Valid Texas Driver License.
- Proficient in verbal and written communication skills.
- Must maintain a residence within a 40-minute response time of the Utility Service Center within 6 months of accepting the position.
- Ability to perform essential duties in an environment that entails a variety of weather conditions and extreme temperatures; working at heights of up to 60’ above ground level; frequent standing, walking, sitting, bending, stooping, climbing, and pushing/pulling; using hoist and dollies to lift and move heavy objects; and physically lifting and moving objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
Preferred:
- Supervisory experience.
- Knowledge of electrical theory and electrical/electronic schematics.
- Knowledge in operation, maintenance, and repair of large DC power systems.
- Knowledge of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA).
- Knowledge of testing standards and procedures.
- Knowledge of NERC and ERCOT compliance requirements and reliability standards as related to Electric Substations.
- Advanced computer application skills.
- Knowledge of generator and UPS systems.
- Training with electrical transmission and distribution equipment.
