Overview

Harvesters, a regional food bank serving a 27-county area across northeastern Kansas and northwestern Missouri, is seeking a strategic finance leader and trusted advisor to serve as its Chief Financial Officer (CFO). Driven by its mission to mobilize the power of the community to create equitable access to nutritious food and address the root causes and impact of hunger, Harvesters works toward a vision of a healthy, thriving community where no one is hungry. The organization is committed to creating a safe, inclusive environment where employees, volunteers, partners, and clients are treated with dignity, respect, and compassion.

As a member of the Executive Leadership Team, the CFO provides enterprise-wide leadership and oversight of financial strategy, operations, governance, compliance, risk management, and organizational sustainability. This role plays a critical part in shaping long-term organizational success by translating financial information into strategic insight, guiding decision-making, safeguarding organizational assets, and advancing Harvesters' mission and impact. This role is eligible for a hybrid work schedule (3 days in office, 2 days remote).

Responsibilities

  • Lead enterprise-wide financial planning, forecasting, long-range financial strategy, and scenario modeling efforts.
  • Partner with organizational leaders to develop, evaluate, and execute strategic initiatives that support Harvesters' mission, vision, and long-term sustainability.
  • Assess strategic opportunities, capital investments, operational initiatives, and organizational risks, providing recommendations that support informed decision-making.
  • Ensure alignment of financial and operational resources with organizational goals and performance objectives.

Financial Operations, Stewardship & Risk Management

  • Monitor organizational financial performance and advise leadership regarding trends, risks, opportunities, and corrective actions.
  • Ensure the integrity, accuracy, and transparency of financial information and reporting.
  • Maintain strong internal controls, risk management practices, and systems of financial accountability.
  • Promote responsible stewardship of organizational resources and long-term financial sustainability.

Audit, Compliance & Governance

  • Serve as the executive leader responsible for financial governance, compliance, fiduciary oversight, and regulatory reporting.
  • Direct all external audits, financial reviews, and compliance activities while serving as the primary liaison with auditors, financial institutions, investment advisors, tax professionals, and regulatory agencies.
  • Ensure timely and accurate completion of Form 990 filings and all required federal, state, local, retirement plan, tax, and regulatory reporting obligations.
  • Monitor evolving accounting standards and nonprofit regulations and recommend appropriate organizational responses.
  • Support the Board of Directors, Finance Committee, and Audit Committee through strategic reporting, financial analysis, governance support, and actionable recommendations.
  • Present financial performance, forecasts, risks, strategic opportunities, and recommendations to the Board and Board Committees.

Organizational Leadership & Talent Development

  • Provide executive leadership to the Finance function, including oversight of the Director of Finance and finance team members.
  • Establish departmental priorities, performance expectations, accountability measures, succession planning, and professional development strategies.
  • Build organizational financial literacy and strengthen accountability for resource stewardship across the organization.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, continuous improvement, inclusion, and mission focus.
  • Lead change initiatives that enhance organizational effectiveness, operational efficiency, and decision-making.

Board & External Partnerships

  • Serve as the executive liaison to the Board of Directors and Finance and Audit Committees, providing strategic counsel and financial insight.
  • Cultivate and maintain productive relationships with donors, financial institutions, auditors, legal counsel, community partners, regulatory agencies, and other key stakeholders.
  • Represent Harvesters in financial and business matters with external partners, strengthening trust, transparency, and organizational credibility.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of progressively responsible financial management and leadership experience required.
  • Demonstrated expertise in strategic financial planning, forecasting, compliance, risk management, organizational sustainability, and financial operations.
  • Proven experience partnering with executive leaders, governing boards, and external stakeholders to drive organizational success.
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, relationship-building, analytical, and strategic decision-making skills.
  • Experience presenting financial information and recommendations to boards, committees, and diverse stakeholder groups.
