Position Overview:
This position shall be responsible to the Director of Public Safety and Health Services for the safety, health and well-being of the Ulster County Community College campus community. This position, which is designated as a Peace Officer in accordance with Criminal Procedure Law §2.10(78), provides administrative, supervisory and hands-on responsibility for safety and security.Key Responsibilities:
- Assists the Director of Public Safety and Health Services in implementing community policing systems that promote safety on campus, administering policies and procedures that build trust and positive relationships with students and employees.
- Assists the Director of Public Safety and Health Services in preparing and updating plans in response to emergency and disaster conditions, or security incidents.
- Assists the Director of Public Safety and Health Services in the development of Standard Operating Procedures that remain current relative to College policy and best practices in the field.
- Assist the Director in the development of emergency response procedures through advisement and participation in designated committees tasked with the planning, development, and implementation of such procedures.
- Responds to incidents, including but not limited to extreme acts of violence in or upon any premises owned or operated by Ulster County Community College and take appropriate actions to ensure the safety and well-being of all persons on said college premises.
- Patrols the campus buildings and grounds watching for signs of disturbances, violations of law and building regulations, or fire hazards.
- Prevent, where possible, disruptive actions and/or criminal activities.
- Establish an effective working relationship with local public law enforcement agencies.
- Quells disturbances at campus using tact and good judgment, and using the appropriate level of force as is reasonable, necessary, and justified in accordance with New York State Penal Law Article 35.
- May possess and carry a firearm as part of their on-duty employment if they are duly licensed by the State of New York and only if authorized to do so by the President.
- Coordinate security activities to maintain control over College property.
- Execute policies established by the President and the Board of Trustees with respect to maintenance of order on campus.
- Train, schedule, and supervise Campus Public Safety personnel and Health Service personnel under the direction of the Director of Public Safety and Health Services.
- Work collaboratively with state and local public law enforcement agencies.
- May administer emergency first aid when needed.
- Other duties as assigned by the Director of Public Safety and Health Services.
Qualifications:
- Candidates must have a minimum of four (4) years’ experience as a sworn Police Officer or Peace Officer having obtained a supervisory rank, or commensurate military experience having obtained a minimum grade of E6 and having received an honorable discharge.
- Certification as a NYS Community College Peace Officer must be obtained within one (1) year from the date of appointment.
- Candidate can have no convictions for any misdemeanor or felony in any jurisdiction at any time and must possess a valid NYS Driver’s License and driving record that qualifies them to operate a college vehicle.
- Candidate must also be licensed to possess and carry a handgun in New York State.
- Candidate must be in sufficient physical condition to meet the demands of the assignment.
- The candidate must have experience handling critical incidents as demonstrated by past employment and training in such fields as law enforcement, military service, or other public safety profession.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associate’s Degree.
Salary:
A starting salary of $71,314 for a 40 hour work week, with an excellent benefits package. This position is contingent upon adequate funding.Additional Information
