The McCain Institute, a part of Arizona State University, seeks an ambitious, proactive full-time communications coordinator to join its Communications team based in Washington, D.C.

 

The communications coordinator reports to the senior director of communications and is responsible for a variety of different communications duties to enhance and maintain the McCain Institute’s brand and reputation. This includes, but is not limited to, social media content creation and distribution, assisting with press outreach, list building and maintenance, news clips and media monitoring, event planning and execution, posting social media, sending press releases and media advisories, managing communications team meetings, and scheduling and administrative support. 

Due to the nature of this position, it is essential that the communications coordinator demonstrate the ability to respond to project-related communications in a timely manner, pay close attention to detail, and be available to complete responsibilities outside normal business hours as necessary.

This position is based in Washington, D.C. and is eligible for a hybrid work schedule.

Essential Duties:

  • Assisting members of the communications team with drafting content, planning events, and supporting administrative processes.

  • Assists with the drafting and sending of press releases, media advisories, and other public communications materials on Cision.

  • Assists with monitoring media mentions and sending the daily news clips email.

  • Helping to maintain McCain Institute contact lists in MailChimp and Cision.

  • Attends events to help the communications team take notes, post on social media, obtain press release quotes, take photos, and distribute branding materials.

  • Assists with live social media posting during events, including the annual Sedona Forum. 

  • Assists with social media content creation and distribution.

  • Assists with creation and distribution of the McCain Institute’s monthly newsletter.

  • Assists with filming and editing videos for communications projects and events.

  • Assists with event coordination and execution, including creating event invitations, monitoring RSVPs, event set up and check in, and other duties as needed.

  • Assists the communications team with scheduling meetings, reserving meeting spaces, booking travel, and other administrative tasks as needed.

  • Helps process the communications team’s financial documentation.

  • Assists with updating the McCain Institute website.

  • Helps prepare interview, meeting, and event memos.

  • Helps create analytics reports.

  • Helps organize the storage of photos, videos, and other communications materials.

  • Supports the communications team as necessary with additional projects related to communications strategy, brand management, website maintenance, and event promotion.

  • Occasional travel to support McCain Institute events.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of and proficiency in social media content creation, video and graphic editing, and video recording software and equipment.

  • Strong skills in writing, editing, and knowledge of AP Style;

  • Strong work ethic, professional attitude, proactive, able to adapt to fast-moving situations, and a desire to excel within a high-energy environment;

  • Highly professional team-player, able to collaborate with internal and external partners;

  • Adaptable, able to complete multifaceted projects in conjunction with day-to-day activities and balance competing deadlines;

  • Resourceful, well organized, highly dependable, efficient, and detail-oriented;

  • Ability to take direction and work in a team environment; and

  • Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of Senator John McCain, foreign policy, politics, human rights, and other issues related to the McCain Institute’s mission and work.

Flexible work options:  

  • Alternative work schedules can include four, 10-hour workdays in a workweek; a nine-day, 80-hour schedule over two workweeks for exempt employees only; and staggered start and stop times.  

  • Hybrid work is an arrangement where employees spend a minimum of 60% of their regular workweek at their primary ASU work location. Dean or vice president-level approval is required.  

  • Remote work is an arrangement where the employee spends less than 60% of their regular workweek at a regularly assigned ASU work location. Executive vice president-level approval is required.  

 

Standard Working Environment:  

  • Climate-controlled office setting subject to extended periods of being in a stationary position. 

  • Regular use of a computer and other office productivity equipment, such as a calculator, copy machine, and printer. 

  • Ability to clearly communicate and exchange accurate information to perform essential duties. 

  • Expected to be responsive to customers; engaged in work production; and resourceful, flexible, and respectful of others.
