About Fort Smith and the Arkansas River Valley


Fort Smith is a vibrant community of around 90,000, with a low cost of living and ample recreational opportunities. Located in the beautiful Arkansas River Valley at the foothills of the Ozark mountains, Fort Smith is nestled between the Ozark-St. Francis and Ouachita National Forests. The region provides hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, hang gliding, whitewater rafting, and camping all within a short drive. In addition, the city supports a variety of cultural attractions, including museums, theaters, an award-winning symphony, and two historic entertainment districts.


LOCATION 


This position is fully on-site and requires a regular presence in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Remote or hybrid work is not available for this position.


JOB SUMMARY


The Assistant/Associate Professor of Clinical Pathology will be responsible for developing and delivering interactive and didactic osteopathic medical education curricula focused on the systems-based pathologic and pathophysiologic mechanisms of disease. Faculty duties will also include engagement in scholarly activities, educational innovation, and institutional, community, and professional service.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborate effectively with faculty, biomedical scientists, clinicians, and curriculum leaders to support and deliver integrated medical education. Contribute subject matter expertise while working within established course objectives, curricular frameworks, and departmental priorities.
  • Support the delivery of existing pathology curriculum and educational programs in coordination with designated course directors and faculty leadership.
  • Develop instructional materials, learning activities, and assessment items that align with established course goals and curricular standards.
  • Work collaboratively with faculty colleagues to ensure consistency, continuity, and integration of pathology content throughout the curriculum.
  • Supervise, interact, and mentor osteopathic medical students in a variety of learning    activities.
  • Function as a faculty member of ACHE through contributions to teaching, scholarship, service, and, when applicable, clinical practice.
  • Participate in curriculum development, assessment, maintenance, and continuous quality improvement activities under the direction of departmental and curriculum leadership, while supporting the effective implementation of established educational programs.
  • Maintain an ongoing personal and professional development portfolio, including documentation of teaching, professional development activities and plans, service provided to college and communities, and scholarly activity for continued competency in pathology and personal growth.
  • Maintain membership, in good standing, in one's primary field of training (DO or MD), as well as in scientific societies in the field of pathology.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Chair of Pathology, Pharmacology, and Physiology or their designee.

QUALIFICATIONS AND CREDENTIALS


Education and Experience


Minimum Qualifications

  • Terminal degree in Pathology (DO or MD degree).
  • Residency training in pathology in a clinical or biomedical research setting.
  • For Associate Professor rank, three (3) years academic experience as a full-time faculty member at a College of Osteopathic Medicine, College of Allopathic Medicine, College of Health, or Allied Sciences.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work effectively within a collaborative academic environment that values professionalism, mutual respect, open communication, and shared responsibility for student success.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the development and implementation of courses in pathology and related topics and demonstrated excellence in delivering course content to medical students.
  • Excellent leadership and administrative skills, a demonstrated record of faculty mentorship and involvement in faculty development, and experience in medical education.
  • Experience in team-based learning approaches to instruction.
  • Demonstrated achievement(s) integrating the basic sciences from research or educational endeavors.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Possess the ability to function productively in a collaborative educational team environment, including the ability to accept direction, coordinate with course leadership, and contribute constructively to shared curricular initiatives.
  • Ability to prioritize and organize numerous and varied assignments.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in computer skills, i.e. Microsoft Office.
  • Display professionalism for the college in all communication and interactions.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and privacy.

  • May be required to accomplish job duties using various types of equipment/supplies to include, but not limited to pens, pencils, calculators, computer keyboards, telephone, etc.
  • May be required to transport oneself to other campus offices, conference rooms, and on occasion, to off-campus sites to attend meetings, conferences, workshops, seminars, etc.
  • May require significant travel or work away from campus.
  • Requires attendance at events representing ACHE both within as well as outside of the college setting.
  • Frequently required to work at a desk, conference table or in meetings of various configurations.
  • Frequently required to see for purposes of reading matter.
  • Frequently required to hear and understand speech at normal levels.
  • Occasionally required to lift items in a normal office environment.
  • Ability to safely lift and carry 25 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation. 
  • Frequently required to operate office and presentation equipment.
