Business Unit Overview
Novanta designs, manufactures, and markets RFID readers and accessories, machine vision, optical scanners, high-precision customized subsystems, and optical subsystems.
Summary
As an Embedded Software Design Engineer (Firmware), you will be responsible for the design, development, engineering testing, integration, and maintenance of embedded software and firmware across multiple HW platforms.
Primary Responsibilities
Embedded Software & Firmware Development
- Design and develop embedded software and firmware using C/C++
- Deliver real-time and Linux-based embedded solutions
- Maintain and enhance existing firmware platforms
System Integration & HW Interaction
- Integrate firmware with hardware components, MCUs and peripherals
- Work with drivers, bootloaders and system initialization
- Analyze and debug HW/SW interaction issues
Testing & Debugging
- Perform bring-up, verification and debugging using lab equipment
- Optimize system performance and reliability
Collaboration & Other Tasks
- Work with HW, SW, and system teams
- Support debugging and validation activities
- Follow development processes and quality standards
- Maintain technical documentation and version control
Required Experience and Skills
- Degree in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering
- Min. 3+ years embedded software/firmware development experience
- Strong C/C++ knowledge
- Knowledge of RTOS and/or embedded Linux
- Understanding of MCU peripherals and protocols (UART, SPI, I2C, USB, Ethernet)
- Experience with versioning tools
- Strong written and spoken English skills
- Ability to read schematics and debug HW issues
- Experience with lab tools (oscilloscope, analyzers)
- Good communication and teamwork skills
- Available to support occasional business travels (max. 10%)

- CI/CD (Jenkins, Docker, genicam)
- Unit tests, code coverage
- System requirements (Jama)
- Task tracking (Jira)
- Customer communication
- Leveraging AI to accelerate your productivity
