The top salary range for this position currently reaches $76,991.17, PLUS, an excellent benefits package! The position will receive a 5.0% salary increase in July 2027; bringing the top step salary to $80,840.72.

Candidates must be available to work the schedule below:
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday: 6:30am-3:00pm

Under either immediate or general supervision, the Parks Worker II performs a variety of gardening and maintenance tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of park facilities, and performs other related duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
Supervision is provided by the Parks Crew Chief.

PARKS WORKER II:
This is the journey level class in the Parks Worker series.  Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the I level, or, when filled from the outside, require prior park maintenance experience.  Appointment to the II level requires that the employee be performing the full range of duties for the class and meet the qualification standards for the class.  A Parks Worker II is expected to perform assigned duties with only occasional instruction or assistance and work is normally reviewed only on completion.  Adequate performance at this level requires the knowledge of general park maintenance, repair and construction as well as a knowledge of applicable Department policies and procedures.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Essential job functions may include, but are not limited to, the following: (These functions may not be present in all positions in this classification.  When a position is filled, the essential functions will be noted in the announcement of position availability.  Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind work assignments as needed.)
 
Waters, mows, weeds, trims, renovates, and fertilizes grass; spades and otherwise prepares ground around plants and shrubs, including mixing and applying fertilizers; plants trees, flowers, and shrubs; rakes leaves, clean walks, fields, courts, and other facilities; picks up rubbish and paper and performs general grounds cleaning; loads rubbish and trimmings on trucks; performs routine cleaning and semi-skilled maintenance in park buildings including carpentry, plumbing, and other trades; operates large power gang mowers, sweepers, edgers, tractors, and various park maintenance equipment; assists in tree trimming acting as ground helper; operates chipper, stump grinders, and other related equipment; applies herbicides, fungicides, and fertilizers; maintains tools and equipment; and performs other related duties as assigned.  Maintains regular attendance.
To qualify for this classification, an individual must possess any combination of experience and education that would likely produce the required knowledge and abilities, and enable the individual to successfully perform the essential job functions of the position.  A typical combination is:

Education and/or Experience:
Formal or informal training which ensures the ability to perform the essential functions of the position.

One year of experience performing duties comparable to those of a Park Maintenance Worker I in the City of Alhambra, and formal or informal training which ensures the ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
 
Knowledge of:
Working knowledge of basic methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in maintenance and construction work, and safe work practices.
 
Ability to:
Learn to use the hand and light power tools required in general park maintenance work; perform heavy manual labor; understand and carry out oral and written directions; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Possession of and ability to maintain a valid California Class "C" Driver's License is required.

Physical Demands
Ability to lift up to 75 pounds, or more than 75 pounds with assistance; sit, stand, squat, kneel, climb stairs, stoop, and walk for prolonged periods of time; and get from one location to another in the course of doing business.
Work Environment
Employee generally works outdoors.  Employee may travel to different locations and be exposed to inclement weather conditions, noise, vibration, dust, or potentially hazardous chemicals.  Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high and the employee may occasionally be exposed to loud talking and interruptions from telephones and/or members of the public.  The nature of the work also requires incumbents to drive motorized vehicles and work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions.

SELECTION PROCESS:

Applicants must complete an application online prior to the final filing date.   Applications will be screened for qualifications, appropriate background, and only the most qualified will be invited to participate in the examination process.  Successful candidates must achieve a minimum passing score in each of the test components.  Applicants will be notified by e-mail as to the test date, time, and location.  The examination process will include:


Oral interview weighted at 100%


Candidates will be required to pass a City administered pre-employment physical and may be required to pass a thorough background investigation and polygraph examination as part of the selection process.  Candidates who do not pass will be disqualified and removed from the eligibility list.
