Parks & Facilities Maintenance Worker III

GENERAL OVERVIEW OF POSITION AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs advanced, skilled maintenance and repair work across City parks, facilities, public grounds, and cemetery areas. This position operates with a high degree of independence, serves as a technical resource to other maintenance staff, and may function as a lead worker on projects or during daily operations. The role supports complex maintenance activities, equipment operation, and coordination of work assignments under the direction of the Parks and Facilities Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Essential functions of the job may include but are not limited to the following:

Advanced Maintenance & Technical Expertise
  1. Perform advanced maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of parks, facilities, structures, irrigation systems, and recreational infrastructure.
  2. Diagnose complex maintenance issues and recommend or implement corrective actions.
  3. Perform preventive maintenance to extend the life and safety of City facilities, grounds, and equipment.
Equipment Operation & Project Leadership
  1. Operate heavy, specialized, or complex maintenance equipment such as tractors, loaders, backhoes, trucks, and construction-related equipment.
  2. Lead or coordinate maintenance projects, including site preparation, grading, concrete work, carpentry, and facility improvements.
  3. Inspect completed work for quality, safety, and compliance with established standards.

Lead Worker & Staff Support

  1. Serve as a lead worker by assigning tasks, providing technical guidance, and assisting with training of Maintenance Worker I and II staff.
  2. Monitor work progress and communicate issues or resource needs to supervisors.
  3. Assist with onboarding and skill development of new employees.
Facilities, Event & Cemetery Operations
  1. Coordinate setup, operation, and teardown of facilities and grounds for programs, events, and rentals.
  2. Perform and oversee cemetery maintenance activities and burial preparations as assigned.
  3. Ensure facilities and grounds are secured and maintained in accordance with safety standards.
Administrative, Safety & Operational Support
  1. Maintain records of work performed, materials used, and equipment maintenance.
  2. Ensure compliance with safety procedures and promote safe work practices.
  3. Attend required training, certifications, and safety meetings.
  4. Perform related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Advanced Maintenance & Technical Skills 
  1. Knowledge of advanced parks, facilities, and grounds maintenance practices.
  2. Knowledge of equipment operation, diagnostics, and minor repair.
Safety & Leadership
  1. Ability to promote and enforce safe work practices.
  2. Ability to recognize hazards and take corrective action.
Work Planning & Independence
  1. Ability to plan, prioritize, and execute complex maintenance tasks with minimal supervision.
  2. Ability to problem-solve and adapt to changing work conditions.
Communication & Team Leadership
  1. Ability to communicate clearly with supervisors, coworkers, and the public.
  2. Ability to guide, mentor, and support maintenance staff.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or acceptable equivalent.
  • Minimum three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in parks maintenance, facilities maintenance, construction, landscaping, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience operating heavy or specialized maintenance equipment.

CERTIFICATION(S) AND LICENSE(S)
  • Must possess a valid driver license with an acceptable driving record as determined by the employer. 
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
PRE- EMPLOYMENT TESTING
Components of the following pre-employment testing may be conducted and must be successfully completed by the employee:
  • Criminal history background checks.
  • Physical Capacity Profile – Level 4.
  • Drug screen.
  • Alcohol testing.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND CONDITIONS
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to communicate clearly and must be able to hear and understand instructions, warnings, and safety signals. The position requires frequent physical activity, including standing, walking, bending, reaching, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and repetitive motion while performing groundskeeping, maintenance, and custodial tasks.
  
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL FUNCTIONS
 The employee must be able to operate hand tools, power tools, and motorized maintenance equipment safely. Vision abilities required include close vision for tool operation and equipment controls, as well as general visual acuity for hazard recognition, equipment awareness, and interaction with coworkers and the public.
  
Must meet Level 4 in Department of Labor's Dictionary of Titles – Heavy Work exerting up to 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, an/or up to 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly.
