Overview

The Senior Accountant is an important member of the Accounting Department with responsibilities related to providing timely and accurate transaction processing and analyses for AHRC Nassau, Nassau County AHRC Foundation, Inc. (“Foundation” or “the Foundation”) and its Affiliates, agencies serving and supporting persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

 

The Senior Accountant operates under the guidance of the Assistant Director of Accounting Operations and must be a team player with good communication, analytical, computer skills and current with FASB non-profit pronouncements. These skills are required to effectively perform analyses and accounting work to support the financial statement close process. This position is highly deadline-driven; management will communicate and expect these deadlines to be met.

Responsibilities

Primary duties and responsibilities include but not limited to:  

 

Accounting and Financial Statement Preparation:

  • Prepare journal entries in accordance with the monthly Accounting closing calendar for all property management companies (Community Services Support Corporation [“CSSC’], Nassau Community Mental Retardation Services Company [“NCMRS”], and Mental Retardation Community Services of Nassau County, Inc – Projects I-V [“MRCS I-V’]), the Foundation, and other entities, as required. These duties include, but are not limited to:
    • Deliver financial statements for each of the above-named entities to the Accounting Department management in time for review and presentation to the boards or committees of each of these entities.
    • Reconcile asset and liability general ledger accounts to related statements and schedules.
  • Maintain audit work papers and provide Trial Balance, General Ledger, and “Provided By Client” (“PBC”) materials to auditors.
  • Update and maintain Right of Use lease accounting schedules, including updating amortization schedules and recording journal entries.
  • Recertify all tenants of the buildings owned by MRCS I-V with the US Dept of Housing and Urban Development (“HUD”), at least annually, and more often as needed.
  • Complete annual Budget-Based Rent Adjustments (“BBRA”s) with HUD to obtain sufficient funding for these entities.

Investment Portfolio:

  • Complete bookkeeping to record investment activity for multiple investment portfolios, including recording interest and dividend income, realized and unrealized market gains, purchases, and sales.
  • Provide ad hoc reporting and analysis as requested by the Chief Financial Officer, for presentation to executive leadership, boards of directors, Investment Committee, and other stakeholders.

Employer Retirement Plans:

  • Support the annual Retirement Plan audits, including facilitating documentation submission to the auditors, coordinating with the Human Resources, Accounting, and Payroll departments.

Budgets:

  • Assist in the preparation of the agency budget using financial statements, projected changes, and staffing patterns.
  • Complete all HUD regulatory reporting and budget submissions, such as the annual Real Estate Assessment Center (“REAC”) filings.

Audits:

  • Support the annual audit process by timely satisfying auditors' sample requests and other PBC items assigned by the VP of Finance & Assistant Director of Accounting Operations.
  • Assist in the preparation of annual IRS Form 990s, NYS CHAR500s, and related schedules.

Other responsibilities:

  • Serve as back-up for other accountants’ positions as needed and determined by the VP of Finance & Assistant Director of Accounting Operations.
  • Assist with long-term debt financing as applicable, including providing information, documents, and reports to bond underwriters, and supporting lender due diligence efforts.
  • Special projects as required, including but not limited to process optimization and system implementation.

Qualifications

Education and/ or experience required:

  •  Bachelor’s Degree preferably in Accounting or Finance
  • Three (3) years relevant work experience, preferably with a not-for-profit agency AND
  • One year of experience in financial and investment reporting
  • Considered a Plus:
    • Familiarity or direct experience with real estate-related accounting and/or financial record-keeping for a not-for-profit fundraising foundation.

 

Skills, Licenses and/ or competencies required:

  • Good command of accounting pronouncements.
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office, Excel, and Word required.
  • Good interpersonal skills exhibited by the ability to communicate with staff, management, outside regulatory agencies, and other departments in a professional manner.
  • Keen attention to detail, analysis, developing and recommending solutions, and the ability to prioritize and complete tasks on a timely basis with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment. Exceptional time-management and organizational skills are required to succeed in a strict, deadline-driven setting.
  • Work requires a strong work ethic, an ability to work independently, a sense of urgency in completion of tasks, a willingness to work a flexible schedule, and a commitment to the mission of the agency.

 

This is primarily a sedentary position that requires prolonged periods of sitting at a computer workstation, with frequent use of hands and fingers to operate a keyboard, mouse, and telephone. The employee must have the ability to read, review, and analyze detailed financial documents, and must possess effective verbal and written communication skills. Occasional light lifting, carrying, or moving of files and documents weighing up to 20 pounds may be required.
