Description

Position Title: Substitute Teacher- Early Education (PRN)
Branch: Various
Type of position: Part time/per diem (non exempt)


Under the direction of the Lead Teacher and Child Development Director, the Substitute Teacher implements classroom curriculum, communicates information to families, and maintains a safe, healthy, warm, engaging, and attractive environment. Age-appropriate activities should provide for growth in skill, self-awareness, group relations, and character development. By conducting him/herself in a caring, responsible, honest, and respectful manner, the Substitute Teacher is a role model for children and adults. In addition, he/she ensures focus on programming that promotes healthy living, social responsibility, and youth development.


Key Responsibilities

 Responsibilities:

1. Keep safety of children as a first priority - with emphasis on an atmosphere that is family-
friendly, age-appropriate, inclusive, and conducive to a quality-driven environment

2. By personal example, facilitate the YMCA core values of honesty, caring, respect, and
responsibility with children, staff, and families - must be a positive, healthy role model

3. Use positive and constructive methods of behavior guidance

4. Supervise children and manage transitions smoothly to ensure safety and appropriate behavior

5. Work with the Lead Teacher in the design of the classroom space and maintain facility and
supplies at all times

6. Assist the Lead Teacher with relevant assessments on a variety of levels throughout the year by
means of progress reports, parent surveys, and program self-assessment

7. Provide children with a well-balanced curriculum of specific, planned learning experiences that
support their social, emotional, physical, cognitive, and language development

8. Utilize curricula which are developmentally and linguistically appropriate; provide for the
development, interests and temperaments of individual children; supports school readiness and
educational development; and include goals for the knowledge and skills to be acquired by
children in various areas of learning

9. Participate in designated hours of training per year

10. Assume accountability for all children assigned to classroom and connect daily with
parents/guardians

11. Adhere to the rules, regulations and procedures set forth by the YMCA of Greater Boston, the
branch location, and the Department of Early Education and Care

12. Perform all duties deemed necessary by branch/program leadership

Substitute Teacher Job Description Addendum

1. Work Location- Assignment Employees are expected to be able to work as needed at the locations indicated at the time of application.Requests to remove work locations must be submitted in writing and are subject to approval.

2. Monthly Availability Submission-Employees must submit their availability for the upcoming month by the 23rd of the current month. Anychanges to their availability after the 23rd must be submitted as a formal time off request and are subject toapproval.

3.On-Call Expectation for Available Days-If an employee is not pre-scheduled for a shift on a day/time they previously marked as available, they are still expected to be able to report to work within two (2) hours of notification if a shift becomes available. If the employee becomes unavailable, they must follow the standard call-out procedure and provide notice to their supervisor a minimum of two (2) hours prior to the start of their previously stated availability.

4. Clock-In/Clock-Out and Travel Time -Employees must clock in upon arrival/start of shift at their assigned program location and clock out upon departure/end of assigned shift. Travel time to and from various locations is not compensated.

5.Shift Assignments and Hours-Shifts are assigned based on program needs and employee availability. There is no guarantee of a minimum number of hours, and hours may vary week to week
