Job Summary
The Senior Accountant is a key member of the accounting team at Red Triangle Oil Co., responsible for maintaining the integrity of financial records and ensuring compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). This position oversees the month-end close process, manages balance sheet reconciliations, and provides financial analysis and reporting to support company operations. The ideal candidate is highly detail-oriented, possesses strong analytical skills, and demonstrates the ability to lead and mentor accounting staff.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Compliance and Internal Controls: Lead the reverification of separation of duties across all accounting functions. Ensure ongoing compliance with GAAP standards and company policies. Review and assess internal controls, identifying gaps and recommending improvements to safeguard company assets.
- Month-End Closing Process: Lead and manage the monthly closing process to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting. Reconcile all balance sheet accounts on a monthly basis. Review and approve all journal entries not personally prepared, ensuring accuracy and proper documentation. Handle fixed assets and depreciation updates and reconciliation.
- Accounts Receivable and Payable Oversight: Verify that A/R and A/P are in balance on a monthly basis. Perform in-depth weekly reviews of all receivables and payables, including aging analysis, to proactively identify discrepancies and ensure collections and payments are on track.
- Credit Card Reconciliations: Manage and verify that all branded credit card accounts are balanced on a weekly basis, including Valero, Gulf, Sinclair, Phillips 76, and Chase accounts.
- Financial Reporting: Prepare monthly RTO financial reports. Prepare Wells Fargo quarterly covenant compliance reports, ensuring all financial covenants are met and properly documented.
- Sales Tax Compliance: Demonstrate a thorough understanding of California sales tax requirements. Verify and approve quarterly sales tax reporting. Verify and reconcile fuel tax reporting, including E-85, ensuring accuracy and timely submission.
- Staff Mentorship and Development: Mentor and develop accounting staff, providing guidance, training, and support to foster professional growth and strengthen the overall capabilities of the accounting team.
Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; CPA or CPA candidate preferred.
- Minimum 3–5 years of progressive accounting experience; experience in the oil, fuel, or distribution industry a plus.
- Strong working knowledge of GAAP and internal control frameworks.
- Experience with California sales tax compliance and fuel tax reporting.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (especially Excel); experience with accounting software required.
- Strong attention to detail, analytical skills, and ability to meet month-end deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor and lead staff in an accounting environment.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
