Description
Overview
Under general supervision, responsible for carrying out broad assignments involving the purchase of high dollar and/or strategic items, requiring extensive or specialized knowledge and experience. Develops sources of supply, negotiates contracts, checks requisitions, contacts suppliers, examines bids and proposals and makes awards. Determines material requirements from Sales & Marketing, Demand Planning and the Production Schedule and coordinates the efficient movement of materials through production cycle, consignment programs and the Kan-ban/Pink-card system. Evaluates supplier reliability and may provide work leadership and train lower level Buyers. Participates in and helps to lead Division-wide Strategic Sourcing efforts. Typically requires a college education or equivalent and a minimum of five years relevant experience. This senior level non-management position reports to the Purchasing Manager.
Responsibilities
- Interviews suppliers; investigates sources of supply; checks suppliers qualifications
- Works on assignments that are complex in nature where considerable judgment and initiative are required in resolving problems and making recommendations
- Performs a variety of administrative duties related to the acquisition of materials, supplies, equipment, and services
- Contacts appropriate suppliers to obtain price quotes, lead-time, methods of procurement, and quality data
- Expedites orders and requisitions
- Performs purchasing transactions requiring the usage of BAAN, Word, Excel, Access, and other computer tools
- Plans and organizes work
- Maintains records, prepares reports, and performs other duties as requested by managers
- Investigates and analyzes new requirements generated by MRP, Kan-ban, or other planning methods
- Attends and conducts a variety of meetings with staff, suppliers, and engineering to clarify specifications, material requirements, contractual agreements, and to resolve problems
- Participates in business-wide and local Strategic Sourcing activities
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a technical field or in Business Adminstration, or equivalent; MBA desirable
- 5+ years of relevant experience
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, with associates and suppliers
- This position requires onsite work only; remote work is not available
Salary range: $80,000 - $100,000
