About the Role
Harney District Hospital is seeking a detail-oriented and dedicated Laboratory Assistant to join our team. In this vital role, you will perform phlebotomy procedures to procure blood specimens and conduct low-complexity and waived laboratory testing on blood and urine using automated equipment. Your work directly supports our laboratory technologists, medical staff, and patients by delivering timely, accurate diagnostic results in a courteous and professional manner.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform phlebotomy procedures to procure high-quality blood specimens from a diverse patient population ranging from infants to geriatrics.
- Process, receive, sort, and distribute specimens for laboratory analysis.
- Conduct low-complexity and waived laboratory testing on blood and urine samples using automated instruments under the direction of the Laboratory Supervisor.
- Perform required quality control, maintenance, and clinical slide staining according to established guidelines.
- Ensure compliant laboratory operations in strict accordance with CLIA standards, Oregon Health Division guidelines, and Oregon Administrative Rules.
- Safely distribute testing results to physicians and nursing staff through authorized communication channels.
- Maintain precise recordkeeping, prepare administrative reports, and safely dispose of contaminated or hazardous materials.
- Keep laboratory workspaces exceptionally clean, orderly, secure, and compliant with all hospital safety protocols.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Education: Equivalent to a high school education combined with formal phlebotomy training.
- Experience: Prior knowledge of phlebotomy procedures, clinical recordkeeping, or an equivalent combination of satisfactory experience and training.
- Compliance: Must provide a copy of your diploma or an official transcript of highest academic achievement at the time of hire to meet strict CLIA / Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988 mandates.
- Skills: Outstanding interpersonal skills with a strong ability to maintain cooperative, helpful, and courteous relationships with patients, hospital staff, and the general public.
- Adaptability: Comfort working in an indoor clinical environment with exposure to biological body fluids, wastes, infections, contagious diseases, and specialized chemical specimens.
