Function / Area:  Casualty Underwriting Team

Reports To:  Casualty Class Manager

Position Summary

Under broad supervision, responsible for underwriting new business and renewal risks within our Casualty book of business for Employers/ Public Liability Excess of Loss. 

Works within own authority license on Employers/ Public Liability Excess of loss risks of varying technical complexity. Utilises underwriting policies, guidelines, rating manual, wordings and insurance laws and regulations.

Key Responsibilities

Reviews submission applications from brokers for Employers/ Public Liability excess new business and renewals. Using technical Underwriting knowledge and skills to identify risk exposure, quantify risk limits, rationalise mitigation factors and summarise risk features.

Determines acceptability of risk in accordance with company guidelines and standards.

• Recommends appropriate pricing and coverage modifications or enhancements for risks after complete analysis and consideration of broker presentations, business factors and competitive situations.

• Prepares quotations and answers questions from Brokers, internal and external contacts and escalates issues as necessary.

• Prepares written communications on adverse underwriting decisions, rate appeals, underwriting requirements, status and declinations. Verbally notifies Brokers of decisions where appropriate in order to ensure clear understanding of the decision.

• Analyses quality, quantity, and profitability of risks underwritten and prepares reports for management review.

• May assist in marketing products and services through the brokerage community and makes field visits to broker offices regularly.

• Develops and maintains positive Broker relationships.

• Keeps current on state/territory issues, regulations and trends.

• Works with more senior underwriters or management on risks exceeding authority level or requiring special handling.

• Develop proficiency in all relevant CNA systems.

• May update the underwriting systems.

• May perform additional duties as assigned.

• Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite as well as other business-related software.
