JOB SUMMARY
This is an entry-level semi-skilled position with the City’s Facilities Maintenance Department. This position is responsible for performing construction, routine maintenance, and general repair of various mechanical systems and components including general plumbing, carpentry, electrical and other tasks associated with building construction, maintenance, and repair.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Performs remodeling duties such as finish carpentry, sheetrock repair, painting and replacing fixture hardware.
- Install and repair furniture, cabinets, fences, partitions, walls, windows, doors and perform other basic carpentry duties.
- Repairs, replaces and installs plumbing fixtures.
- Performs preventative maintenance duties such as changing filters and lubricating equipment.
- Performs the duties of custodian as required.
- Inspect building facilities to identify maintenance needs.
- Operate, maintain and repair a variety of mechanical tools and equipment such as power saws, sanders, drills, augers and other related tools and equipment.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
- Methods, materials and equipment common to the building maintenance trade.
- Basic arithmetic and general craft skills common to the building maintenance trade.
- Tools and equipment used in building maintenance, construction and repair.
- Occupational hazards and necessary precautions applicable to building maintenance and mechanical maintenance work.
Ability to:
- Troubleshoot, diagnose and repair systems malfunctions.
- Perform general building maintenance and repair work.
- Understand and execute oral and written instructions.
- Work independently or cooperatively as a member of a team to complete work on schedule and according to quality control standards.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, co-workers and the general public.
- Physically perform all essential job functions.
- Work Overtime hours as required.
Experience and Education: Any combination equivalent to the level of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities will qualify.
Experience:
- One year previous building maintenance and repair experience. The ideal candidate will have experience in construction and remodeling.
Education:
- High School Diploma or GED required.
Licenses:
- Valid Class “C” or greater Driver’s License.
The duties of this position are performed during an assigned shift at a City owned or leased building or other facility. Incumbents in this position can reasonably expect to be exposed to various hazardous substances such as corrosive agents, solvents, grease, oils and other lubricants, dust and moderately loud noise levels on a routine basis. Incumbents in this position can expect to routinely push, pull, lift and carry a minimum of 75lbs daily without assistance. Additionally, incumbents in this position should be physically able to bend, stoop, squat, kneel and reach in the performance of their daily duties. Incumbents in this position may be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays and on an on-call basis as assigned.
This position has been classified as a “safety-sensitive” position. All incumbents assigned to a “safety-sensitive” position shall be required to comply with all provisions of the City of Sherman, Texas Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver’s Drug and Alcohol Testing Program.
