ABOUT THE ROLE 

The Lecturer/ Associate Lecturer contributes primarily to teaching and learning within the Design Studies program while maintaining and developing scholarly, research and/or professional practice activities appropriate to the appointment level. Both roles are expected to engage with industry and professional communities and contribute collaboratively to the academic life of the program. Lecturer appointments are additionally expected to demonstrate an emerging research profile and contribute to research leadership and academic development activities.

Specifically, the Lecturer/ Associate Lecturer is responsible for carrying out teaching activities within undergraduate programs and for maintaining and advancing their scholarly, research and/or professional capabilities. The Lecturer/ Associate Lecturer is also expected to actively promote the program by establishing and maintaining memberships, links and partnerships with academic, industry and professional communities. The Lecturer/ Associate Lecturer is expected to work collaboratively and collegially with fellow academics within the teaching team, and update colleagues and students on developments in their subject area or specialisation.

The Lecturer/ Associate Lecturer may undertake course coordination activities where appropriate and will be expected to teach across a range of courses within the Design Studies program. We are specifically looking for candidates with expertise in one or more of the following areas:

Relevant areas of expertise may include:

  • Spatial Design, including spatial experience, exhibition design, interior environments, wayfinding, environmental graphics and/or experience-led spaces.
  • User Experience (UX) and Interaction Design, including user-centred design, design research, information architecture, prototyping, usability and digital experience design.
  • Product Design, including human-centred product development, form and function, prototyping, materials, fabrication and/or digital manufacturing.
  • 3D Design and Visualisation, including relevant modelling, rendering and prototyping tools such as Blender and related industry-standard software.

Reports to:                                       Associate Program Manager, Design Studies, Hanoi Campus

Indirectly reports to:                  Senior Program Manager, Design Studies

Reporting lines may be adjusted in line with organisational changes.

KEY ACCOUNTIBILITIES 

For Associate Lecturer and Lecturer position:

  • Undergraduate teaching including designing, conducting and moderating assessment, implementing improvements informed by peer review, course evaluation and/or student feedback.
  • Maintain professional practice and/or scholarly activity appropriate to the role, including creative practice, exhibitions and/or publications.
  • Participate in committees, working parties and service activities.
  • Adhere to the Academic Expectations and Development Framework.
  • Undertake course coordination where required.

Additional for Lecturer position:

  • Contribute to the development of research initiatives and scholarly outputs.
  • Initiate and deliver activities that develop the teaching and research capability of academic staff.
  • Other duties commensurate with the scope of the role

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

  • The skillset required would be a practicing designer with a specialist skill (as listed above) but also with a broad background and understanding of other design disciplines.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching in studio-based and practice-based learning environments, including facilitating critique, iterative project process development, and collaborative/team-based learning.
  • Ability to undertake course coordination where needed.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work effectively with and to negotiate sensitively with students especially on issues related to effective learning.
  • A team player with excellent interpersonal and communications skills appropriate for interacting with other staff and external stakeholders from industry, together with a strong commitment to teamwork and multidisciplinary collaboration.
  • Recent and sustained performance regarding student outcomes, student experience and feedback; combined with experience and skill in a range of teaching settings.
  • Ability to operate within own discipline and cross-disciplinary/multidisciplinary teams to achieve department and University strategic outcomes.
  • Ability to work with external partners, industries, organisations and communities.
  • Ability to display appropriate behaviours in line with the RMIT Behavioural Capability Framework (Connectedness, Commitment to Excellence; Imagination and Innovation; Impact; Inclusion; Agility).

Additional criteria for Lecturer appointments

  • Emerging track record and recognition for quality research outputs which will contribute to existing discipline and School research areas evidenced by publications, exhibitions, professional practice, development of new research initiatives, competitive research funding, and industry links.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise higher degree by research candidates.
  • Ability to build effective networks with colleagues and generate alternative funding projects through effective liaison with industry and government.
  • Ability to display appropriate behaviours in line with the position, RMIT Values and RMIT Leadership Model.

All academic appointments at RMIT Vietnam must meet University and local regulatory requirements, including English proficiency, background checks, and (for international candidates) eligibility for a work permit.   

English is the language of teaching and communication at RMIT Vietnam. For this role, the minimum requirement is IELTS (Academic) with a score of at least 7.0 with no competency less than 6.5 (or equivalent, as outlined in the Recruitment, Selection and Onboarding Guidelines).
