ST2134 Advanced Statistics: Statistical Inference
To ‘infer’ means to make general statements on the basis of specific observations. From an early age, people are experts at performing inference. It is such a fundamental part of our intelligence that we do it even subconsciously. We learn to classify objects on the basis of a very limited set of examples. From just a few simple pictures, a child will learn to infer that anything displaying certain characteristics of a long neck and long, thin legs is a giraffe. Of course, the immediacy with which people draw inferences can lead to mistaken inferences– some harmless, or even amusing. However, sometimes misplaced inferences can feed our prejudices and lead us to completely incorrect conclusions about other people’s natures or intentions
