About the team and the role:
eBay’s Selling Experience organization builds the platform capabilities that help millions of sellers list, manage, and grow their businesses across eBay’s global marketplace. This team owns backend systems that power critical seller-facing experiences, with a strong focus on modernizing the Listing Platform and evolving core selling infrastructure toward scalable, reliable, and developer-friendly architectures.
This is a senior individual contributor role for an experienced backend engineer who thrives on solving complex distributed systems problems and driving technical initiatives from concept to production. In this role, you will lead architecture and system design within your domain, write high-quality production software, and partner closely with engineers, architects, product managers, and cross-functional teams to deliver modern platform capabilities at eBay scale. This role offers the opportunity to shape business-critical systems, influence engineering direction, mentor others, and help raise the bar for engineering excellence across the organization.
What you will accomplish:
Design, build, and operate scalable backend services and platform capabilities that improve seller experiences and support high-volume, business-critical workflows across eBay’s marketplace.
Lead the modernization of Listing Platform components by evolving legacy systems toward GraphQL APIs, microservices, and resilient distributed architectures without compromising availability or reliability.
Own complex technical initiatives end-to-end, translating ambiguous business and product needs into clear architecture, implementation plans, trade-offs, and measurable delivery milestones.
Improve system performance, reliability, observability, and maintainability through strong engineering practices, thoughtful design reviews, production readiness, and operational excellence.
Collaborate across engineering, product, architecture, and partner teams to deliver solutions involving multiple functions, align technical decisions, and drive platform improvements with broad organizational impact.
Mentor engineers and strengthen the engineering culture through code reviews. Provide mentorship, debugging support, and collaborative learning. Use AI-assisted development tools to improve quality and efficiency.
What you will bring:
8+ years of software engineering experience, including strong hands-on development of backend services and distributed systems in Java, Kotlin, Node.js, or similar technologies.
Proven experience designing and building GraphQL APIs, REST services, and scalable service-oriented or microservices-based applications in complex production environments.
Strong foundation in computer science fundamentals, including object-oriented design, data structures, algorithms, design patterns, and sound technical decision-making.
Demonstrated ability to independently lead architecture, implementation, and production delivery for complex technical initiatives, including troubleshooting performance, scalability, and reliability challenges.
Experience across the full software development lifecycle, including testing, deployment, monitoring, production support, and improving observability, automation, and operational health.
Strong communication and collaboration skills, with experience mentoring engineers and an interest in applying AI-assisted engineering tools or emerging AI capabilities to improve software development effectiveness.
