Description

Responsible for the design of production tools and/or machines, and for developing solutions to production problems relating to materials, processes, and tooling. This person supports new programs by developing new processes, designing tooling and machinery, and developing production controls. Additionally, the Manufacturing Engineer sets up new equipment, ensures satisfactory operation of the equipment, and teaches others to use it properly.

Essential Functions: 

  1. Designs tools and/or machines of varying types (some of a very complex nature) for use in the manufacture of company products. 
  2. Re-designs, repairs, or replaces in-process production program equipment, production control hardware, and tooling. 
  3. Develops processes, methods, tooling, and production controls for new programs; supervises their assembly and proofing. 
  4. Sets up new equipment, ensures its satisfactory operation, and instructs others to use the new equipment properly. 
  5. Writes procedures for the operation of new or existing equipment. 
  6. Stays informed concerning new manufacturing technology and equipment, and investigates their potential applications. Recommends incorporation of new technology for company applications where feasible and practical. 
  7. Justifies budgeting, design, installation, training and startup of manufacturing projects. 
  8. Implement process improvements and cost/waste reduction projects. 
  9. Support the design review and implementation of “lean” manufacturing techniques. 
  10. Act as production and engineering liaison across all functional areas of the plant. 
  11. Develop and implement industrial engineering techniques [Kanban, Kaizen, work plans]. 
  12. Participate in the transition of product from design to prototype to full production. 
  13. Support development of FMEA’s. 
  14. Participate in the development of time standards and new payment concepts. 
  15. Support the R&D projects. 
  16. Adhere to all policies, procedures, and/or requirements set forth in AKG’s environmental management system (EMS). 
  17. Regular physical attendance is a requirement for this position.  Refer to AKG attendance policy in the Information Handbook for Employees. 

Secondary Functions: 

  1. Assist in the training of less-experienced department personnel 
  2. As assigned by Manufacturing Engineer Manager or Vice President/General

Requirements

 Minimum Qualifications: 

  1. B.S.M.E degree, or a B.S degree with a concentration of coursework in Industrial Technology or Industrial Engineering. 
  2. Experience in capital appropriation evaluation and analysis is helpful 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  1. Knowledgeable concerning mechanical principles, machining practices, the properties of metals, and the application of mathematics and dimensions to production machinery and tooling.  
  2. Knowledgeable concerning modern fabrication and assembly techniques and machine-shop practices and techniques. 
  3. Strong drafting skills.  
  4. Able to mentally visualize and comprehend all aspects of a manufacturing equipment or tooling problem, understand the interrelationships of factors affecting a given situation, and be attentive to detail. 
  5. Capable of efficiently integrating existing methods with new innovations to economically solve production problems in a timely manner.  
  6. Has initiative and able to work effectively with little direction and/or few guidelines. 
  7. Able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. 
  8. Working knowledge of computer systems and data processing. 
  9. Familiar with computer-controlled machine tools and has had exposure to high-volume automated production equipment.   

Physical Demands: 

  1. Must be able to sit (60%) and walk (40%) of the time.  May also be required to bend, stoop, pull, push, twist and turn. 
  2. Must be able to lift up to 50lbs (5%) of the time. 
  3. Must be able to use a chain hoist, pallet jack, hand truck, saw, grinder and power tools. 
  4. Must use safety equipment such as steel toe shoes, safety glasses and hearing protection.  Safety glasses and hearing protection are provided.
