Job Summary

We are seeking a Civil Technologist / Site Inspector with experience in municipal infrastructure (water, wastewater, stormwater, roads) and land development to join our team. Reporting to the Civil Engineering Lead, you will work in a dynamic, multi-disciplinary environment- collaborating with planners, architects, and structural engineers under the mentorship of experienced professionals. This role offers a balance of office-based civil design and on-site construction inspection. You will be involved in projects from early design through to construction, gaining broad exposure and hands-on experience across multiple disciplines and project types.

For the right person, this position can be based in a hybrid work environment.

Responsibilities

Primary Objectives

  • Deliver high-quality civil design and field inspection services for municipal infrastructure and land development projects, including water, wastewater, roads, and drainage systems.
  • Support project delivery from concept through construction by coordinating design, documentation, and site activities.
  • Ensure construction works are completed in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, applicable standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Contribute to successful project outcomes through effective communication, problem-solving, and collaboration with internal teams, clients, and contractors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare civil design drawings and models (grading, servicing, roads, and drainage) using Civil 3D from conceptual design through to tender and construction.
  • Conduct quantity take-offs and prepare cost estimates/opinions of probable cost for civil works.
  • Coordinate with engineers, project managers, and other disciplines to ensure integrated and accurate design deliverables.
  • Support permitting and approvals with municipal, provincial, and federal authorities.
  • Conduct site inspections to monitor construction progress, quality, and compliance with contract documents and MMCD standards.
  • Prepare field reports, deficiency lists, and inspection documentation in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Liaise with contractors, clients, and regulators to address site issues, respond to RFIs, and support contract administration.
  • Review shop drawings and contractor submittals for general conformance with design intent.
  • Monitor and report on erosion and sediment control measures and environmental compliance on active construction sites.
  • Identify and communicate design or construction issues, proposing practical solutions in collaboration with the project team.
  • Participate in project meetings, including design coordination and site meetings, as required.
  • Travel to and work in remote project locations within British Columbia as needed.

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology or a related field.
  • Registration ASTTBC (or eligibility) is considered an asset.

Experience

  • Minimum 5+ years of experience designing civil linear infrastructure, earthworks, grading and drainage in Canada, preferably BC.
  • Proficiency in Civil 3D, including corridors, profiles, cross-sections, and pipe works.
  • Strong understanding of municipal engineering design standards, including MMCD.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
  • Strong communication, technical writing, and computer skills.
  • Valid BC driver’s license.

What You Bring

  • Effective organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Willingness and ability to work in remote communities in British Columbia.

What Success Looks Like

  • Design deliverables are accurate, complete, and meet project timelines, with minimal revisions required.
  • Construction inspections are thorough, well-documented, and consistently ensure compliance with drawings, specifications, and standards.
  • Site issues are proactively identified and resolved efficiently, minimizing delays and rework.
  • Inspection documentation is timely, accurate, and relied upon by clients and contractors.
  • Clear, professional communication is maintained with project teams, clients, contractors, and regulators.
  • Projects are supported effectively from design through construction, contributing to successful delivery within scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Strong working relationships are built across internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Strong contractor relationships while maintaining quality and contract compliance.
  • Innovation and continuous improvement in drawing quality, reporting, efficiency, and project delivery.
  • Demonstrates reliability, accountability, and sound judgment when working independently, including in remote environments.
