Responsibilities
Internal Medicine – Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner
FT - varied AM and PM shifts
An Internal Medicine Advanced Practice Provider (APP), including a Physician Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) specializing in Internal Medicine, plays an integral role in providing comprehensive medical care to patients. The APP works collaboratively with and, as required by applicable state law and practice policies, under the supervision or collaboration of a licensed physician.
The specific scope of responsibilities may vary based on the practice setting, patient population, and applicable state and federal regulations.
Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive medical histories and physical examinations.
- Evaluate patients and develop appropriate differential diagnoses.
- Order, perform, and interpret diagnostic studies, including laboratory testing, imaging, and electrocardiograms (EKGs/ECGs).
- Develop and implement individualized treatment plans in collaboration with the supervising or collaborating physician, as applicable.
- Prescribe medications and therapies, including initiating, adjusting, or discontinuing medications within the provider’s authorized scope of practice.
- Provide preventive care, health promotion, patient education, and disease-management counseling.
- Evaluate, monitor, and manage acute and chronic medical conditions, including diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and other conditions commonly encountered in Internal Medicine.
- Collaborate with physicians, specialists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated and comprehensive patient care.
- Consult with physicians regarding complex, high-risk, or clinically appropriate cases.
- Communicate effectively with patients and their families regarding diagnoses, treatment options, care plans, and expected outcomes.
- Address patient questions and concerns and provide appropriate support and education.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and complete electronic medical records, including documentation of patient encounters, assessments, diagnoses, and treatment plans.
- Monitor patients’ clinical progress and modify treatment plans as clinically indicated.
- Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, and other initiatives designed to improve clinical outcomes and the patient experience.
- Maintain knowledge of current medical advances, evidence-based practices, research, and clinical guidelines relevant to Internal Medicine.
- Participate in continuing medical education, conferences, workshops, seminars, and other professional development activities as required.
- Ensure compliance with applicable federal and state laws, regulations, professional standards, and organizational policies and procedures.
- Advocate for patients’ health, safety, rights, and access to appropriate care and resources.
- Work collaboratively as a member of the healthcare team and provide guidance or mentorship to colleagues when appropriate.
Requirements
Physician Assistant (PA)
- Graduate of an accredited PA program; minimum Bachelor’s degree required.
- Current state PA license and PA-C certification.
Nurse Practitioner (NP)
- Graduate of an accredited NP program.
- Current RN license and national AANP or ANCC certification.
Experience
- New graduates are welcome to apply.
- Prior experience in Internal Medicine or a related clinical setting is preferred but not required.
Certifications and Licensure
- Current PA-C certification for Physician Assistants or current AANP/ANCC national certification for Nurse Practitioners.
- Current BLS, ACLS, and AED certification is required.
- BLS/ACLS/AED training will be accepted only from the following organizations:
- American Heart Association (AHA)
- American Red Cross — BLS/ACLS for Healthcare Providers (CPR & AED) Program
- Online-only certification programs from any organization will not be accepted.
- DEA registration is required for providers with discharge responsibilities at SFH in Roslyn, NY, when applicable to the position and scope of practice.
