Description
Under general supervision, assists library patrons, performs clerical tasks, and completes other library work as required. Will be required to work nights or weekends. This position is scheduled an average 10 hours a week, including rotating Saturday, with two schedule options from which to choose:

The following duties are normal for this position. They should not be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive; other duties may be required as assigned.
- Provides excellent customer service to patrons of all ages, including new users and those not comfortable on computers.
- Performs basic computer operations in the library catalog and other softwares, must be able to navigate the internet to check email and other updates, and perform searches.
- Assists patrons with locating materials and resources in the library.
- Performs circulation desk procedures, such as checking materials in and out, registering new users, and collecting fees.
- Checks in deliveries of interlibrary loan materials.
- Assists with library opening and closing procedures.
- Assists with special projects as assigned, such as removing under-used library materials, designing displays, and keeping shelves tidy.
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Previous customer service experience or library experience.
- Keyboarding and general office experience.
- Must be able to work the schedule as outlined above.
- Ability to learn pertinent computer programs (or software) and to effectively use them to perform assigned duties.
- Ability to effectively present information to patrons and respond to questions from patrons.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of library patron information.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions.
- Ability to handle monetary transactions and to operate library business machines properly.
- Ability to work independently, organize and prioritize work, respond to varied and changing work demands and make decisions as required.
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to maintain and foster cooperative and courteous working relationships with the public, peers, and supervisors.
- Keyboarding and basic computing, Internet familiarity and searching skills, filing ability.
- Willingness to maintain skills in above-mentioned areas through active participation in appropriate continuing education activities.
- Working knowledge of English grammar and spelling.
- Working knowledge of library methods and procedures.
Minimum Physical Abilities Required to Perform Job:
- Ability to frequently move among shelves and to place books on shelves. Some shelves may require bending, stooping, or reaching in order to access.
- Ability to move books, sort them, process them, and place them on shelves
- Ability to visually inspect books, documents, and computer screen at close range, as well as a visually monitor the library environment from a distance
- Ability to use a computer
- Ability to receive and effectively communicate information to patrons in person and via telephone
- Ability to move a cart weighing 300-400 pounds on wheels
