As an Airport Maintenance Technician, you will perform maintenance of airport grounds, runways, taxiways, buildings, and equipment. This hands-on role combines facility maintenance, heavy equipment operation, snow removal, and support for aircraft servicing and airport users.

Reporting to the Airport Manager, you will work independently and with a team to support airport operations in accordance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) standards and County policies. This is a non-exempt position with on-call responsibilities.
  • Inspect and maintain runways, taxiways, ramps, airport grounds, and facilities; identify and report hazards and assist with airport notices (NOTAMs).
  • Operate snowplows, sanders, blowers, loaders, backhoes, and sweepers to remove snow, ice, and debris from airfield surfaces, parking areas, and sidewalks.
  • Maintain County-owned airport buildings through cleaning, painting, minor carpentry, and general repairs; perform maintenance on plumbing, heating, drainage, HVAC, refrigeration, and related systems.
  • Assist with maintaining and troubleshooting airfield lighting, navigational aids, electrical systems, and weather monitoring equipment.
  • Inspect and maintain fuel trucks, ground service equipment, and other machinery; perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs.
  • Assist Line Service Technicians with aircraft fueling, towing, de-icing, and marshalling; provide courteous assistance to pilots and passengers.
  • Mow, trim, and maintain landscaping; load, unload, and stock freight, supplies, and equipment.
  • Conduct wildlife mitigation, monitor airport wells, and maintain environmental compliance records, inspection reports, maintenance logs, and fuel reports.
  • Respond to emergency calls and support snow removal and weather-related operations on a 24/7 basis as needed.
  • Follow safety procedures, use appropriate protective equipment, and perform other related duties as assigned.
  • High school diploma or equivalent. Additional coursework related to technical skills is desirable.
  • At least one year of experience in building, grounds, mechanical, or equipment maintenance, with experience in an airport, public works, or similar environment. A combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Wisconsin Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tanker endorsement.
  • Proficiency in operating and maintaining light and heavy equipment, including snowplows, mowers, loaders, and related machinery.
  • Working knowledge of maintenance practices, preventive maintenance, and basic plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, painting, and mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge of airport operations and safety practices, including applicable FAA, state, and local requirements.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions, technical manuals, and safety guidelines; troubleshoot problems and exercise sound judgment around aircraft and moving equipment.
  • Basic computer skills for data entry, reports, maintenance logs, and other digital records.
  • Clear communication, dependable work habits, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively while providing professional customer service.
  • Ability to pass all pre-employment background checks and maintain compliance with FAA security requirements.
  • Work is performed indoors and outdoors, with exposure to moving aircraft, heavy equipment, noise, dust, fumes, fuels, chemicals, and extreme heat and cold.
  • Duties require frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, and reaching, including work on ladders, rooftops, or in confined spaces.
  • Regularly lift, carry, push, or pull objects and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Use hand and power tools and operate vehicles and machinery safely. Manual dexterity, coordination, vision, and hearing are required to perform inspections, identify hazards, and communicate by radio in noisy environments.
  • Schedules may include nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call rotations, particularly during snow removal or airport emergencies. Strict safety procedures and personal protective equipment are required.
