Job Summary:

The Support Services Office is located in Gardiner Montana at the North entrance of Yellowstone National Park.  Within our department, we process Parkwide Lost & Found, distribution of parkwide mail for our employees & guests, renovation of furniture, and production of parkwide print materials and signage. The Furniture Refinisher Lead inspects furniture for structural and cosmetic flaws, then perform repairs using techniques like gluing, sanding, and using putty or other fillers.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects furniture for structural and cosmetic flaws, then perform repairs using techniques like gluing, sanding, and using putty or other fillers.
  • Ability to diagnose and fix damage effectively with meticulous care in preparing surfaces by removing old finishes, sanding, and filling cracks or imperfections and applying finishes.
  • Thoroughly cleans and smooth surfaces by removing old finishes, sanding, and filling cracks or imperfections.
  • Mix ingredients to achieve desired colors and shades, then apply stains, paints, lacquers, varnishes, or waxes using brushes, spray guns, or hand-rubbing techniques.
  • Keep the work area clean, organized, and safe.
  • Handle furniture with care, especially antique pieces.
  • Discusses expectations and recommend solutions for restoration projects to Support Services Manager and appropriate parkwide staff.
  • Communicates equipment and inventory needs for paints, tools, carpentry supplies, and building maintenance.
  • Proficient in the methods, techniques, and styling needed to weave historic furniture, and repair furniture.

Qualifications

  • Understanding of different wood types, finishes, and restoration techniques for modern and historic furniture and equipment.
  • Ability to operate and maintain saws, drills, sanders, spray booth, and other carpentry equipment safely and effectively and provide oversight to furniture staff.
  • Accurate measurement, cutting, and shaping of materials like wood, drywall, and plastic to construct frameworks and components of furniture and equipment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Able to be on your feet for at least 8-10 hours each day, including bending, pushing and pulling and have the physical stamina and conditioning to withstand heavy labor, i.e. 8-10 hours of moving heavy furniture and mattresses at elevations of more than 7700 feet.
  • Ability to lift and carry 75 pounds.
  • Must be capable of driving 24,000 GVW vehicle on narrow mountain roads.
