The Role: Associate Director, Regulatory Research Associates

The Team: The Regulatory Research Associates (RRA) team delivers authoritative research, data, and analysis on state-level utility regulation and utility financial performance across the U.S. energy sector. Our work helps investors, utilities, policymakers, and other industry participants evaluate regulatory risk, understand evolving market and policy developments, and identify emerging trends shaping the future of energy. Through proprietary datasets, comparative regulatory assessments, and industry-leading research, we provide insights that support critical business and investment decisions.

The Impact: As an Associate Director, you will serve as a key contributor to RRA's research and analytical capabilities, leading the evaluation of complex regulatory, legislative, and market developments affecting electric and natural gas utilities, and representing RRA in client and stakeholder engagements. Leveraging proprietary datasets, advanced analytical methods, and AI-enabled technologies, you will develop insights that help clients assess regulatory risk and understand emerging industry trends. You will also contribute to the evolution of research processes and analytical tools, helping enhance the efficiency, depth, and impact of RRA's industry-leading research. This role supports S&P Global's vision of the "Research of the Future," where innovation, technology, and domain expertise combine to deliver increasingly powerful insights for clients.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a subject matter expert on US state utility regulation, regulatory risk, and utility financial performance, providing guidance and insight on complex regulatory and industry developments.
  • Lead the identification, analysis, and interpretation of significant regulatory, legislative, and policy developments affecting electric and natural gas utilities across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Own and continuously enhance proprietary regulatory datasets, analytical frameworks, and research processes to ensure scalability, consistency, and long-term sustainability.
  • Produce and oversee high-impact research, comparative evaluations, and thought leadership that support investor, utility, and industry decision-making.
  • Partner across S&P Global divisions and research teams to develop integrated insights, innovative products, and client-focused solutions.
  • Evaluate emerging trends in utility regulation, energy policy, grid modernization, and market design, identifying implications for clients and opportunities for new research.
  • Leverage advanced analytics, AI-enabled tools, and technology-driven workflows to improve research efficiency, expand analytical capabilities, and enhance product quality.
  • Build and maintain relationships with regulators, utility executives, industry organizations, and other subject matter experts to strengthen market intelligence and research depth.
  • Serve as a trusted resource for clients by addressing complex inquiries, delivering presentations, and communicating regulatory developments and market implications.
  • Mentor and support junior analysts by sharing expertise, reviewing research, and promoting best practices in analytical rigor, data quality, and written communication.
  • Recommend strategic enhancements to research methodologies, operational processes, and product offerings based on market developments and client needs.
  • Demonstrate leadership by fostering collaboration, encouraging innovation, and helping advance the team's objectives and S&P Global's values.
