Description
The Accounting Technician plays an important role in supporting the financial operations of Kandiyohi County by performing routine and non-routine accounting and clerical duties in accordance with standard accounting practices. This position is responsible for processing and verifying financial transactions, monitoring expenses and payments, reconciling accounts, preparing financial reports, and maintaining accurate accounting records and databases. The role requires strong attention to detail, organizational skills, proficiency with spreadsheets and accounting software, and the ability to communicate effectively with staff, vendors, agencies, and the public.
- Process, verify, and document financial transactions, including accounts payable and accounts receivable.
- Track budget accounts and expenses and monitor a variety of financial accounts.
- Reconcile bank statements, payments, bills, accounts, and monthly statements.
- Prepare and process checks, receipts, payment requests, and vouchers.
- Process, verify, and code invoices and review bills for accuracy and approval.
- Process and submit medical claims to insurance payers (Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurance).
- Post patient and insurance payments from remittances
- Review and manage insurance denials, re-submissions, and appeals.
- Verify patient insurance coverage and eligibility.
- Investigate errors, discrepancies, or problems in the processing of fiscal transactions and take appropriate steps to resolve them.
- Proofread, review, and correct accounts and financial records to ensure accuracy and completeness.
- Contact internal departments and external agencies to communicate payment-related information, resolve financial discrepancies, and verify information.
- Prepare, review, verify, and submit standardized financial statements, audit lists, forms, spreadsheets, and reports.
- Design, develop, and maintain spreadsheets used for financial tracking, reporting, and analysis.
- Enter financial data using general ledger and other accounting software.
- Enter, maintain, verify, review, and update department accounting records and databases.
- Verify individual eligibility for programs based on available record information and ensure information is accurate and complete.
- Provide customer service by responding to financial and general information inquiries from the public, staff, vendors, agencies, and other individuals in person, by phone, or via email.
- Research pricing and purchase office supplies as needed.
- Maintain accurate and organized accounting records in accordance with established procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Associate’s degree in accounting or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience.
- Three years of healthcare billing, accounting support or related experience preferred.
- Proficiency with electronic medical records (EMR) systems, billing software, and Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.
- Experience with accounting software and general ledger systems preferred.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate financial records.
- Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers, supervisors, vendors, agencies, and members of the public.
- Accounting principles and practices related to the assigned area.

- Familiarity with ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codes, as well as medical terminology.
