The Youth & Family Services Assistant Program Director – Day Camp & Teen Focus supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit charitable organization committed to strengthening the community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

 

Under the direction of the Director of Youth & Family Services, the Assistant Program Director is responsible for supporting the development and operation of Youth & Family Services programs, with primary responsibility for Summer Day Camp and Teen Engagement. This position works in a matrixed relationship with the Association Teen Engagement Director to align branch programming with Association-wide strategies, standards, initiatives, and goals. This role leads the planning, implementation, growth, and evaluation of Day Camp and branch-based Teen Programs while supporting After School Child Care (ASCC) and Child Watch operations as needed.

Responsibilities

Program Leadership & Operations

  • Direct, manage, and coordinate all aspects of Summer Day Camp for the Prisma Health Family YMCA.
  • Develop and implement high-quality childcare curricula and activities appropriate for participants of varying ages and developmental stages.
  • Coordinate program registration and the use of branch facilities for daily Summer Day Camp activities.
  • Provide operational or staffing support to ASCC and Child Watch when Summer Day Camp is not in season.
  • Ensure YMCA core values—caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility—and the character development model are incorporated into program activities.

Seasonal Planning & Program Delivery

  • During the school year, lead preparation for Summer Day Camp, including staff recruitment, program setup, training, field trip reservations, and staff development; assist with After School programming as needed.
  • During the summer, assume primary responsibility for daily Summer Day Camp operations, including hiring, training, staff management, and program implementation.
  • Establish new program activities and expand programming in alignment with Association and branch strategic plans.

Staff & Volunteer Leadership

  • Build and maintain a collaborative Youth & Family Services leadership team with the Director of Youth & Family Services, Youth & Family Program Director, and other program staff.
  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, coach, and develop part-time staff and volunteers in partnership with HR and the Association Teen Engagement Director.
  • Conduct and document annual staff evaluations and provide ongoing coaching and informal performance feedback to maintain a high-quality team.
  • Develop and implement recruiting plans for Youth & Family Services programs.

Safety, Compliance & Risk Management

  • Ensure compliance with applicable state and local childcare regulations, YMCA standards, and established program requirements.
  • Ensure program standards are met, and safety procedures are consistently followed.
  • Coordinate safe transportation for participants attending field trips and events.
  • Respond appropriately to safety concerns and emergency situations.

Budget, Facilities & Resources

  • Develop and monitor the program budget to meet fiscal objectives.
  • Secure facilities, transportation, and admission arrangements for field trips and special events.
  • Purchase, inventory, and maintain Summer Day Camp materials, supplies, equipment, and snacks.

Teen Engagement & Leadership Development

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate year-round teen engagement programs aligned with branch and Association priorities.
  • Build relationships with schools, community organizations, and other partners to expand opportunities for teen participation.
  • Recruit, train, and supervise staff and volunteers who support teen programs and activities.
  • Plan and coordinate teen leadership development opportunities, service-learning activities, and special events.
  • Promote teen programs, monitor participation and retention, gather participant feedback, and identify opportunities for continued growth.
  • Work in a matrixed partnership with the Association Director of Teen Engagement to implement Association-wide teen engagement strategies, standards, and priorities at the branch level.
  • Participate in Association-wide teen engagement planning and training and coordinate branch calendars, communications, and outcomes with the Association Teen Engagement Director.
  • Track and report teen participation, retention, engagement, and program outcomes and communicate branch needs and feedback to both the Director of Youth & Family Services and the Association Teen Engagement Director.

Partnerships, Communication & Program Growth

  • Partner with the VP of Youth & Family Services on staffing support, curriculum, training, program growth, and staff and participant engagement and retention.
  • Partner with the Teen Engagement Director to provide teen engagement activities during the school year.
  • Collaborate with the Teen Engagement Director and teen engagement staff across branches to share resources, successful practices, and program opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with community organizations.
  • Promote Youth & Family Services programs and oversee branch-level outreach in coordination with branch marketing and promotion plans.
  • Serve as the branch representative on the Youth & Family Services AOC (Advancing Our Cause).

Organizational Leadership & Accountability

  • Promote an organizational culture that values staff engagement and diversity, strengthens inclusion, and builds global community in the United States and abroad.
  • Model the YMCA of Greenville leadership attributes of Accountability, Ownership, Managerial Courage, Teamwork, and Focused Discipline.
  • Participate in quarterly reviews with executive leadership to evaluate departmental progress, growth, staffing, results, goals, and application of YMCA leadership attributes.
  • Maintain clear, timely communication with the Director of Youth & Family Services regarding staff needs, program performance, risks, and organizational support.
  • The Director of Youth & Family Services is this role’s direct supervisor and is responsible for formal performance management. The Association Teen Engagement Director may provide input regarding collaboration, program quality, and achievement of teen engagement goals.

  • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with consumers.
  • Attend/complete required abuse risk management training
  • Adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising consumers.
  • Follow mandated reporting requirements.
  • Adhere to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities.
  • Follow employees and volunteers screening requirements and use screening instruments to screen for abuse risk.
  • Provide employees and volunteers with ongoing supervision and training related to abuse risk.
  • Provide employees and volunteers with regular feedback regarding their boundaries with consumers.
  • Require employees and volunteers to adhere to policies and procedures related to abuse risk.
  • Respond quickly to policy and procedure violations using the organization’s progressive disciplinary procedures.
  • Respond seriously and confidentially to reports of suspicious and inappropriate behaviors.
  • Follow mandated reporting requirements.
  • Communicate to all employees and volunteers the organization’s commitment to protect their consumer from abuse.
  • Report essential abuse risk management information to the board of directors.

Qualifications

*Compensation will be determined commensurate qualifications and experience.*

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, early childhood, recreation, human services or a related field; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • At least four (4) years of related supervisory experience in school-aged childcare, teen programming, and/or day camping.
  • Must be at least 20 years old and meet all requirements to operate a YMCA bus.
  • Knowledge of applicable childcare licensing requirements, YMCA standards and American Camp Association (ACA) day camp standard.
  • Strong interpersonal, public relations and written and verbal communications skills, including the ability to deliver oral presentations.
  • Demonstrated skills in staff and volunteer supervision, values education, community program development, and fund raising.
  • Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations.
  • Incumbents must complete mandatory training in New Staff Orientation, BBP/Child Abuse Prevention and CPR/1st Aid/AED training within 30 days of employment.
