Job Description

Senior Director, Enterprise Architecture

CTO Office - Information Technology Vice-Presidency (ITVP)

Build the Future with Us

Position Context

At a time when artificial intelligence, automation, and digital platforms are redefining the pace of change in financial services, the Information Technology Vice-Presidency is seeking to strengthen its ability to drive a comprehensive, cohesive, and forward-looking enterprise architecture vision.

Reporting to the CTO within the CTO Office, the Senior Director, Enterprise Architecture plays a critical role in evolving enterprise architecture from a function primarily focused on alignment and governance into a strategic capability that accelerates transformation, simplification, and enterprise-wide AI adoption.

Your Mission

As the leader responsible for transforming the Architecture function, the Senior Director, Enterprise Architecture is accountable for defining, championing, and evolving the enterprise architecture vision across information, application, and technology domains while supporting business sectors in their transformation initiatives. The incumbent shapes the foundations that will enable iA to evolve into an AI-augmented enterprise, where data, platforms, processes, and digital capabilities can scale rapidly, securely, and efficiently.

Working in close partnership with senior architects and domain experts, the Senior Director creates the conditions that enable architectural expertise to have greater impact, faster, on organizational decisions and transformations.

Complementing the role of the Senior Director, Business Architecture and Innovation, this position is responsible for enterprise technology directions, principles, and architectures, while the other role is responsible for business capability and value stream architecture.

What You Will Accomplish with Us

Enterprise Architecture Vision and Strategic Direction

  • Define and maintain an integrated enterprise architecture vision aligned with the organization’s strategic priorities and its ambition to become a more AI-augmented enterprise.
  • Establish and evolve target technology architectures, principles, and directions, while exercising decision-making authority over them.
  • Ensure alignment between business models and priorities, organizational capabilities, key processes, and application and technology architectures, while identifying opportunities for simplification and acceleration.
  • Define target architectures and evolution roadmaps that modernize platforms, reduce complexity, and accelerate value delivery.

IT 2030 Plan, Roadmaps, and the ITE4B Portfolio

  • Lead the IT 2030 plan across all business lines and domains, coordinating its execution while managing dependencies and priorities.
  • Ensure business sector roadmaps remain aligned with enterprise-wide directions.
  • Oversee the ITE4B (IT Enablers for Business) portfolio under delegated authority from the CTO, ensuring architectural and technological consistency while aligning initiatives with target architectures, the simplification strategy, and the IT 2030 plan.
  • Lead prioritization and investment arbitration processes for the ITE4B portfolio by making dependencies and initiative value visible and reporting to the CTO and CIO in collaboration with the Corporate Project Office and business sectors, while preserving accountability for major decisions at the sector level.

Modernization of the Enterprise Architecture Practice

  • Reinvent the enterprise architecture practice to support the pace of transformation required in the age of artificial intelligence while maintaining robustness, security, and compliance within a regulated environment.
  • Leverage generative AI, automation, and modern engineering approaches to accelerate artifact production, impact analysis, documentation, and architectural decision-making.
  • Evolve the architecture function toward a practice focused more on influence, reuse, platforms, and business outcomes than on documentation production.

Business and IT Alignment and Convergence

  • Foster long-term alignment between business needs and architectural choices by positioning architecture as a strategic accelerator rather than a control function.
  • Translate business challenges into coherent architectural capabilities.
  • Position enterprise architecture as the integration point for AI, data, cybersecurity, and technology strategies, ensuring the foundations required for their responsible scaling.
  • Champion iAFG’s IT strategy and ensure its alignment with business, innovation, and AI roadmaps, in close collaboration with the Senior Director, Business Architecture and Innovation.

Governance and Architectural Leadership

  • Design and lead governance mechanisms that accelerate key decisions, clarify trade-offs, and reduce ambiguity.
  • Establish architecture directions, principles, standards, and positions on major and cross-functional initiatives, emphasizing clear, actionable, and risk-proportionate guidance.
  • Support executive decision-making bodies through clear and structured analysis while helping resolve complex cross-functional issues.
  • Define enterprise architecture standards and frameworks that support strong governance and enable increasing integration with platforms, processes, and delivery tools.
  • In collaboration with Risk Management, define AI and agent governance principles and architectural control layers, including auditability, autonomy boundaries, and data traceability.
  • Accelerate architecture decisions by equipping the practice with templates, reusable components, and pre-approved decisions for priority initiatives, ensuring that the compliant path is also the simplest one.

Leadership and Team Development

  • Provide strong leadership to enterprise architecture directors and teams through clear direction, senior expertise, and empowerment.
  • Unite stakeholders around a shared vision by acting as an effective communicator and negotiator.
  • Build future-ready capabilities and support the growth and development of architecture talent.

What Will Help You Succeed in This Role

Education and Experience

  • University degree in Information Technology, Engineering, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Significant experience in enterprise architecture, IT strategy, or organizational transformation, including leadership responsibilities and transformation of professional practices.
  • Strong understanding of business models and complex IT environments.
  • Experience collaborating with executive-level stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of trends in artificial intelligence, data, cybersecurity, automation, and emerging architectures, as well as their implications within a regulated financial services environment (an asset).

Key Competencies

  • Broad organizational and systems-thinking perspective.
  • Ability to guide technology decisions while leveraging the expertise of senior architects and domain specialists.
  • Strong analytical and synthesis skills with the ability to put complex and cross-functional issues into perspective.
  • Excellent communication and influence skills at strategic levels.
  • Strong negotiation skills and the ability to unite stakeholders around a common vision.
  • Ability to advance strategic initiatives over both short- and medium-term horizons, with a strong focus on execution speed, simplification, and value creation.
  • Advanced proficiency in both French and English, as the incumbent will be required to collaborate daily, both verbally and in writing, with unilingual English-speaking partners, teams, and stakeholders across Canada and internationally.

Personal Attributes

  • Credible leadership and professional presence.
  • Sound judgment and professional maturity.
  • Collaborative approach.
  • Pragmatism and action-oriented mindset.
