Description
The Park and Public Works Department is responsible for the maintenance, repair, design, and construction of the city’s infrastructure with the exception of water. The department's overall objective is to provide consistent, uninterrupted service, and to respond to any malfunction or event immediately to restore service in the least amount of time possible
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Maintenance Worker I is responsible for performing a variety of skilled and semiskilled work in the maintenance of park grounds or landscaped areas, street, facilities, fleet maintenance and public works.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Maintenance Worker I performs work under the supervision of the Parks and Public Works Division Manager or Foreman.
The Maintenance Worker I is expected to perform the entire range of maintenance work. The Maintenance Worker I is distinguished from a Maintenance Worker II and III by the performance of routine tasks and duties. Maintenance Worker I may advance to the Maintenance Worker II level when training and experience are sufficient to perform at the journey level.

Duties
- Perform skilled and semiskilled work in one or more specific duties related to the repair and maintenance of streets, alleys, storm drains, sewers, sidewalks, curbs, traffic signs and markings, streetlights, facilities, fleet, parks and grounds and traffic signals.
- Use hand tools in various assignments; operate three axle vehicles, tractors, brush chippers, mowers, and aerial lift; operate light motorized equipment including trucks, pneumatic power tools, paint sprayer, power grinder, and related equipment.
- Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on a variety of tools, vehicles, and equipment; report the need for major repairs.
- Frame, pour, and finish curbs, gutters, and sidewalks.
- Perform a variety of semiskilled work in the maintenance of park grounds or landscaped areas including; cultivate and prepare ground around plants and shrubs, mix and apply fertilizers and pesticides; plant, prune, and remove trees, flowers, and shrubs; operate, repair and install irrigation systems; mow, weed, prune, renovate, and fertilize grass and rake leaves.
- Clean picnic grounds and tables, walk fields, courts, restrooms, and other facilities. Conduct field inspections to ensure the safety of the public facilities.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of
- General principles, methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in street and fleet maintenance and repair.
- Basic construction and public works maintenance techniques; care and operation of a variety of power tools and equipment.
- General principles, methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in cultivating, trimming, removing trees, irrigation systems, and park maintenance.
Skills and Demands:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Education
- Graduation from high school or equivalent is required.
Experience
- One (1) year experience in one (1) or more of the following areas: fleet, facilities, grounds, or street maintenance.
Licenses/Certificates
- Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. Employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, crawl, use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, or crouch. Employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 51 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Employee is regularly required to talk or listen, in person and by telephone. Operate light and heavy motorized equipment, and/or automobiles or trucks while performing the duties of this position. Intermittently, twist to reach equipment; perform maintenance to and construction of streets, curbs, gutters and other infrastructure; perform simple grasping and fine manipulation; use telephone and communicate through written means; walk to observe activities; periodically bend and squat; interact with employees and the public in possible challenging situations; drive, operate and sit in a vehicle or equipment for long periods of time; enter and exit a vehicle often and get from one location to another in the course of doing business. Work outdoors in all weather conditions including hot with sun exposure, cold and wet.
Work Environment:
Employee generally works 10% indoors and 90% outdoors.
While performing the duties of this job indoors, the work environment is generally in a temperature-controlled office. Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but the employee may occasionally be exposed to loud talking and interruptions from telephones, office equipment and/or members of the public and emergency vehicle sirens.
While performing the duties of this job outdoors, the employee may be exposed to noise, vibration, extremes in temperature or humidity, dust, and most weather conditions. Noise levels in the work environment is usually moderate but the employee may occasionally be exposed to high level noises including but not limited to emergency vehicle sirens, outdoor construction equipment, road traffic, shouting, and yelling.
