Background
Freeda (Free from Domestic Abuse) offers a range of support services to women and their children facing domestic abuse to help protect them by offering safehouse services and/or support in the community. Freeda also undertakes a number of activities to promote understanding and prevention of domestic abuse including awareness raising, education and training sessions and working with government, charity and business partners on relevant topics.
Working closely with all the Committee members, the HR member will provide direct support to the Committee on all Freeda HR matters. The HR member is a full Committee member and attends meetings (6 per year) and actively engages in Freeda activities. Committee member responsibilities include ensuring Freeda adheres to the Charity’s Constitution, good governance and oversight of the charity’s activities in fulfilling its mission.
This is a voluntary role, offering a rewarding opportunity to contribute meaningfully to a local charity, with a strong profile, delivering critical services to our islanders. Ideally it would suit someone who is able to dedicate some time and energy to our cause.
Purpose of the Role
Freeda has a team of 15 full time and 5 bank staff. HR is critical to providing the right working environment for our team to deliver the best results for our clients, particularly as the nature of the work is emotionally challenging and can take its toll on staff. As the Freeda Committee’s HR advisor, you will advise the Committee on all aspects designed to ensure effective HR governance and support the wellbeing of staff as well as guiding the CEO and Committee in specific situations, as and when required.
Key Responsibilities
· Support the Committee in providing effective oversight to all HR matters.
· Advise on all HR governance matters
· Support the development of up-to-date HR policies
· Ensure full adherence to Jersey Employment law and related legal instruments
· Advise on specific internal HR situations should they arise
· Develop and maintain an effective and constructive relationship with the Committee and CEO, assisting and guiding the CEO on HR matters when required
· Support and inform Committee governance oversight and compliance with legal and statutory requirements under the Jersey Charities Commission, the Jersey Care Commission and Freeda’s Constitution, etc.
· Engage with the Committee and CEO in the review of the annual strategic plan, deliverable organisational goals and an annual Freeda report from an HR perspective
· Together with other Committee members, ensure Freeda’s activities align with its mission and values
· Participate in Freeda’s public events as often as possible and provide support to fundraising
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
EXPERIENCE:
- Held a senior HR management role in an organisation for a minimum of 5 years
- Experience in applying Jersey employment law
- Previous HR leadership roles desirable
- Some governance, management and strategic oversight experience
- Previous trustee or committee experience
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
- In depth knowledge of Jersey employment law and related instances
- Sound understanding and commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion
- An understanding of the cause and effect of violence and abuse against women and girls
- Sound knowledge of governance and financial management
- Knowledge of the Jersey Care Commission and/or Social Services policies an advantage
