Mechanical Engineering Intern

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) seeks a driven, innovative, professional and collaborative individual for our Mechanical Engineering Intern position. The ideal candidate for this position will be able to work part-time during the school year and full-time during the summer in Pullman, WA. This internship provides the opportunity to work alongside experienced engineers, technicians, and manufacturing personnel while contributing to real-world projects that support the reliability and safety of electrical power systems. As a Mechanical Engineer Intern, a typical day might include the following:

• Provide support to mechanical engineering staff as needed: 

• Develop project problem statements, conceptualize solutions, and execute engineering plans. 

• Perform tolerance, root cause, return on investment (ROI), and structural analysis.

• Design plastic, machined and sheet metal parts.

• Brainstorm and create test and mechanical validation plans. 

• Update SolidWorks models and drawings.

• Digitally document engineering project information in project notebooks.

• Data entry of technical information into company databases (MS Access, Lotus Notes, SolidWorks).

• Follow structured mechanical development procedures.

This job might be for you if you:

• Are pursuing a BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering with one to two years engineering education completed.

• Have hands on experience through engineering, academic or personal projects. 

• Can conduct defined testing procedures.

• Have strong problem-solving skills.

• Have working knowledge of MS Office Applications or equivalent.

• Have one year SolidWorks Experience (or equivalent CAD software).

• Have strong writing, documentation, and speaking skills.

• Can learn new skills and assume new responsibilities.

• Can work cooperatively in a team environment.

• Have background check results satisfactory to SEL.

• Have negative drug test result(s).

Preferred Qualifications:

• Familiarity with manufacturing and assembly processes.

• Demonstrated problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills.
