This position implements, and teaches group fitness classes at the Lynnwood Recreation Center. The position is within the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department, and works under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor.

Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

  • Prepare for and instruct fitness classes in a group setting allowing for different levels of fitness among students.
  • Observe participants in a group setting where fitness and abilities vary informing them of corrective measures necessary for skill improvement and proper form. Instruct participants in maintaining exertion levels in order to maximize benefits from effective and SAFE exercise routines.
  • Participate in discussions and development of department fitness programs.
  • Establish and maintain an environment of teamwork.
  • Promote personal goal attainment for participants.
  • Performing physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.

Minimum age of 18 years, certification as a MOSSA fitness instructor or Zumba training or ability to obtain within three months,  valid First Aid card, and valid CPR card are required qualifications. Must successfully pass a WSP background check and is required to work early mornings, evenings, or weekends. Must have already completed the Group Centergy, Group Fight or Zumba initial training certification to be eligible to meet minimum requirements within the next ninety days.

Job Location and Equipment Utilized

Work is normally performed in an indoor environment, subject to noise and frequent interruptions. Equipment utilized includes weights, exercise, and stereo equipment.  Work may be performed on weekends and/or evenings as scheduled.

  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Knowledge of principles and methods for Body Training Systems Fitness.
  • Knowledge of curriculum and training design; teaching, and instruction for individuals and groups.
  • Ability to take initiative.
  • Ability to make sound decisions.
  • Ability to trouble shoot problematic situations.
  • Ability to function in an independent manner.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing and clearly convey instructions to others.
  • Ability to lead and motivate others.
  • Ability to prepare and execute class programs.
