Undergraduate Intern Mechanical Engineer Job Description
Altera is seeking a motivated undergraduate Mechanical Engineering intern to join the Silicon Platform Board Engineering team. In this role, you will contribute to the development of product- and system-level solutions for Altera’s programmable FPGA devices.
Your work will help shape the system-level design of next-generation FPGAs. As an intern Mechanical Engineer, you will support product-level design activities for development, rapid prototyping, and production systems. You will collaborate closely with product architecture, board design engineering teams to deliver platform-level solutions.
You will also support the development of system-level mechanical and thermal solutions based on application and feature requirements.
What you will do
- Work with a worldwide team under the guidance of senior engineers to design and develop mechanical and thermal systems, as well as mechanical solutions for PCB layouts, with high quality and minimal design iterations.
- Perform basic thermal and structural analysis, tolerance analysis, and detailed part design.
- Support prototype and production design activities to reduce technical and schedule risks.
- Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams and, when needed, external suppliers, including contract design and manufacturing partners.
- Participate in design for manufacturing (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA) feasibility studies.
- Contribute to product feasibility studies to help meet marketing and product requirements.
- Assist in risk assessments to identify and predict engineering issues before they impact project priorities.
- Help evaluate materials, processes, and technologies to meet product and project goals.
- Document technical data and engineering information, including CAD databases, technical papers, presentations, and specifications, in accordance with Altera standards.
Qualifications
You must meet the minimum qualifications below to be considered for this position. Additional qualifications will be considered a plus.
Minimum qualifications
- Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.
- Basic knowledge of mechanical and thermal design concepts.
- Experience with AutoCAD or Pro/Engineer (Creo).
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Willingness to learn, take initiative, and take on new challenges.
Preferred qualifications
- Familiarity with tolerance analysis and detailed part design.
- Interest in product development, prototyping, and manufacturing processes.
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, cross-functional environment.
