Description

The Recreation Coordinator is responsible for planning, organizing, promoting, and delivering a variety of adult and youth recreation programs for the City of Sandpoint, with a primary focus on sports leagues such as adult volleyball, softball, and indoor/outdoor soccer. The position oversees program logistics from concept through completion, including scheduling, registration, equipment staging, and coordination of officials. The Recreation Coordinator works under the direct supervision of the Recreation Facilities Supervisor and collaborates closely with the Parks & Recreation Division Administrative Assistant. This position requires independent judgment, strong communication skills, and the ability to supervise part-time officials and volunteers during programs.

This is a part-time,  non-exempt position. The position will be based out of the James E. Russell Sports Center at Travers Park, with cubicle space and a work station also provided at City Hall if needed. Work hours vary by season and program demands and will include evening and weekend assignments. Work is performed both in indoor recreation facilities and outdoors in weather typical of North Idaho.This list is ILLUSTRATIVE only and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and duties performed by the incumbent of this class. Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Develop, plan, and implement adult and youth recreation programs, leagues, clinics, and special events.
  • Promote programs through City communication channels, community outreach, and partner organizations.
  • Manage program registration, participant communication, rosters, and schedules using City software.
  • Coordinate facility reservations for practices, games, programs and events; ensure compliance with policies and availability of required spaces.
  • Recruit, hire, schedule, and supervise referees, umpires, scorekeepers, or other contracted officials. 
  • Prepare, transport, set up, break down, and order program equipment; ensure equipment is maintained, organized, and in safe working condition.
  • Serve as on-site staff during programs and games; resolve participant concerns; enforce program rules and City policies.
  • Assist with budget tracking for program expenditures and revenues; recommend program fees and improvements.
  • Maintain accurate records of participation, incidents, and program evaluations.
  • Ensure safe program environments by following and implementing City safety protocols.
  • Support the Recreation Facilities Supervisor with operational tasks related to indoor recreation facilities, athletic fields, and shared-use spaces.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:
  • Age-appropriate interactions and communication techniques.
  • Knowledge of rules, gameplay, and organization of common recreational sports (volleyball, soccer, softball, etc.).
Skills in and Ability to:
  • Work with participants in group or individual settings accordingly.
  • Ability to plan and implement programs, evaluate outcomes, and adapt to community needs.
  • Strong communication and customer-service skills; ability to work effectively with participants of all ages.
  • Ability to supervise, motivate, and evaluate part-time staff and officials.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends during league seasons and special events.
  • Skilled in time management, organization, problem-solving, and conflict resolution.
  • Ability to safely move, lift, and transport program equipment (typically 30–50 lbs.).
  • Proficiency with basic computer applications and the ability to learn registration/scheduling software.
Physical Demands:
  • Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions and to communicate effectively in person or on a telephone.
  • Sufficient visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend written word instructions and monitor participants.
  • Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, permits the employee to teach and demonstrate skills for assigned sports activity.
  • Sufficient personal mobility, flexibility, and balance, with or without accommodation, which permits the employee run, jump, throw, or perform physical tasks specific to assigned sports activity.
  • Jobs in this class require performing repetitive motions in fingering and hand/wrist/arm movements. Related job tasks may require, with or without reasonable accommodation, lifting or moving up to 25 pounds and frequently and 50 pounds occasionally, and stooping, bending, crouching and reaching.
Desired Experience:
  • High school diploma or GED required; coursework in recreation management, sports administration, physical education, or related field preferred.
  • Two (2) years of experience coordinating recreation programs, youth/adult sports leagues, or related activities; equivalent education/experience combination may be considered.
  • Experience supervising part-time staff, game officials, or volunteers preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • First Aid/CPR certification required within six (6) months of hire.
Other Qualifications:
  • Must enjoy working with youth and being outside
  • Teach participants in the fundamental skills and techniques for various program activities
  • Satisfactory criminal background check for applicants 18 years of age or older.
