Controller — High-End Retail & Hospitality Fit-Out GC

Our client builds for the most prestigious retailers, restaurateurs and hospitality brands in the country. They are a design-build general contractor just north of Boston specializing in luxury retail and hospitality interior fit-out: flagship stores, prototype rollouts, boutiques, chef-driven restaurants, airport concessions and executive offices. Their work opens in New York, Boston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Chicago, Honolulu and most of the other markets where a brand puts its best foot forward.

They are a second-generation, family-owned builder in their fourth decade, and they are as committed to their people as they are to their clients. Relationships are the whole business model here: key employees measure tenure in decades, and nearly all of the company's annual volume is repeat work from clients who will not let anyone else touch their stores.

The Opportunity

They need a proven Controller to own day-to-day accounting and financial operations and give ownership timely, accurate, decision-ready reporting.

The company is growing, and this seat is the one that future-proofs the finances. Their client list is made up of global fashion houses, jewellers, and watchmakers you would recognise instantly, which means the standards are exacting and there is no room for error in the numbers.

You will report directly to the President/Owner. There is no layer between you and the person who makes the decisions, and you will have an established outside CPA relationship to lean on for the specialist work, so you are running the finance function with support rather than carrying every piece of it alone.

This is a clean handoff, not a rescue. The person in the seat today is moving on to a new opportunity with the owner's full support, and there is time to transition properly but with a sense of urgency.

This is not a slow, one-job-at-a-time contractor. The work is high-volume and fast: dozens of jobs running at once, coast to coast, on short schedules with hard open dates that cannot move. Managing that from the accounting seat takes real command of job cost.

Modern offices near the Rt. 95 North / Rt. 128 junction make this a genuinely good commute from the North Shore, the Merrimack Valley, southern New Hampshire or MetroWest.

Key Responsibilities

• Own all day-to-day accounting and financial operations: project accounting, job cost, AP/AR, payroll, cash management, month-end close and financial reporting
• Own the WIP schedule across a large, fast-turning portfolio of concurrent projects, and hold the line on percentage-of-completion accuracy, revenue recognition and margin fade
• Manage financial processes across both design-build and bid-build work to ensure accuracy, compliance and efficiency
• Partner with Project Managers and Operations to analyse project performance, forecast cash flow, and maintain cost control from buyout through closeout
• Keep multi-state operations clean: payroll across multiple states, sales and use tax, contractor licensing and registrations, and travel and per-diem cost tracking on out-of-state jobs
• Manage subcontractor financial compliance: prequalification, certificates of insurance, lien waivers and subcontractor payment
• Maintain relationships with external auditors, insurance providers, bankers and bonding companies, including the reporting that supports the surety and credit relationships
• Provide executive leadership with timely, accurate reporting while strengthening internal controls and automating what should not be done by hand
• Mentor and develop the accounting support

What You Bring

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA or MBA is a plus, not a requirement
• 10+ years of construction finance experience inside a general contracting or self-performing subcontractor environment, with time in a Controller or long term Assistant Controller seat
• Strong grasp of GAAP, percentage-of-completion, WIP reporting, cash flow management and cost accounting
• Comfort with high project volume and short-duration jobs, and the discipline to keep the numbers clean while the schedule moves fast
• Working knowledge of construction ERP and project management platforms (Sage 300 CRE, Viewpoint, Foundation, CMiC, Procore or similar) and the confidence to improve how they are used
• Detail-oriented and analytical, with the willingness to roll up your sleeves and work alongside operations rather than behind them
• Tech-savvy, with a bias toward continuous improvement and efficiency
