Position Description

The McGill University Department of Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences invites applications for a full-time position as a member of the Contract Academic Staff as a Clinician-Teacher or Clinician-Scientist at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor (Clinical). The successful candidate will be appointed to clinical practice in the Department of Medicine and the Respiratory Division at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). The professorial rank will be determined according to the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience. This is a Contract Academic Staff position and does not confer eligibility for tenure.

The Department of Medicine is a leader in academic medicine. Our educational and research missions support excellent and innovative clinical programs across our teaching hospitals.  The McGill University Health Centre is one of McGill’s major teaching hospitals affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal, in the province of Quebec.

The McGill Division of Respiratory Medicine is highly committed to the pursuit of excellence in clinical care, research and medical education. Its mission includes as a priority the strategic recruitment of outstanding sub-specialists committed to academic medicine.

Job Duties

Please see the Department of Medicine (DOM) website for McGill DOM Career path definitions. Our career path definitions specify typical ranges of time allotted to clinical work, teaching (clinical and didactic), research and administration.

As a Clinician-Teacher, the successful candidate’s major non-clinical focus will be on teaching the next generation of physicians. Teaching activity will include both didactic and clinical teaching.

As a Clinician-Scientist, the candidate will be expected to spend 50% of their time dedicated to research and develop and maintain an independent and productive research program. The research program is expected to attract external peer reviewed funding (e.g. Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Fonds de Recherche Québec—Santé). Internal startup funding may be available on a competitive basis to a suitable candidate.

The candidate’s clinical responsibilities will focus on the outpatient and inpatient care of individuals with cystic fibrosis and non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis across the various sites of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). The candidate will join the multidisciplinary Cystic Fibrosis Clinic of the Montreal Chest Institute. The candidate will also be expected to develop the McGill Bronchiectasis Clinic. The candidate’s clinical practice will also include inpatient and outpatient general respirology services at the Montreal Chest Institute/Royal Victoria Hospital (Glen), the Montreal General Hospital, and the Lachine Hospital sites of the MUHC.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the teaching and supervision of undergraduate and graduate learners, as well as clinical and research trainees, and to participate in continuing medical education activities. If the selected candidate is appointed as a Clinician-Teacher, they will not be expected to secure independent research funding but will be expected to support the research activities conducted by members of the Division of Respiratory Medicine.

All McGill faculty members are expected to contribute to service activities within their units, the University, and the wider scholarly community. A demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion is also expected.
